Pan Lovers!!!!

If you can't be hear to take on the action in the Oval, consider supporting the culture on February 13 by paying to view it online for $9.95 US

Here's some more info courtesy of the When Steel Talks blog

Trinidad and Tobago - If all goes according to plan, steelpan music lovers the world over should be able to opt for the Pay-per-view (PPV) option made available via CTNTWorld, part of the  state-owned CNMG (Caribbean New Media Group) - this, according to iMedia Caribbean marketing exec Ian John.  “From Monday (February 8) the Pay-Per-View will go live where they can actually make payments online,” John told When Steel Talks (WST).  This is part of an ongoing initiative as “Pan Trinbago and the state are trying to maximize revenue, to cover some of the costs incurred,” John explained.

Free Download: Free Steelpan App brings Caribbean Culture to the iPhone

>> Thursday, December 3, 2009

I downloaded what I think is a pretty nifty app for my iPod Touch a few weeks ago, and I have been dying to tell you about it ever since! Carnival Steel Drum by Carnival Village, brings a basic introduction to the tenor pan to your fingertips (Quite literally.) Not only do you get a pretty realistic sense of how to play pan by tapping around on the screen. They also offer a simplistic play along game a la Guitar Hero  where the player must repeated tap their finger on lit sections of the pan in order to gain points. The soundtrack is Alison Hinds` "Roll".

The sound is a melodious steelpan synth that's pretty fun to play around with, and not a shabby distraction if you've got little ones who like to play with your gadgets.  Not to mention, it makes Caribbean culture cool and accessible by blending Trinidad and Tobago's national instrument with state-of-the-art popular technology.

You know I'm all for culture!  Kudos goes out to CarnivalVillage.org.uk for the foresight and the resources spent on being the first to bring pan to the iPhone.  What's next?  A Wii game?  If allyuh do dah one, I hope I get a lil piece of the action ($$$ - in case I was being too vague)

So the best news about Carnival Steel Drum is that it's free!!! Tell your friends on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.  Call your little cousin, and that boy from your Philosophy class! I would be ecstatic to see download shoot through the roof.  Let's show the iTunes App Store that Caribbean people are proud to support their own!

Booster Shot: No More Competitive Pan at Crop Over

>> Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Cuts. Cuts. Cuts... Sadly, steelpan will not be a competitive arena at 2009 Barbados Crop Overdue to what appears to be a lack of respect for the nation's local talent.

I found this article in this morning's Barbados Advocate. Still shaking my head. Thought you may like it...

Just Say it: When will we start to value other artforms?
BY JANICE PERRYMAN
THE National Cultural Foundation (NCF) met earlier this year with steelbands of Barbados and discussed the rules of the impending steelband competition to be held during the Crop Over Festival 2009. Subsequent to this meeting they corresponded with the leaders of the bands and informed them of the details of the competition – prizes, date, time, venue, etc.

Players obviously began to prepare by paying an arranger and having regular rehearsal. It was therefore a surprise when we heard by a chance conversation that the event has been cancelled.

Nurse's Lounge: Tribute to the Pan Poet

>> Monday, April 27, 2009

Saturday night was a big birthday celebration for a very special friend and colleague of mine, Mr. Jesse Andrews.  In the poetry world, he's known as the pan poet.  As a pannist, his love for Trinidad's national instrument led to him to writing and publish a collection of poems that magic drum, and the land of his birth, entitled "Port of Pan".

Jesse's fam was ringing in his 60th birthday at a sweet soca bashment in Mississauga, complete with a live band (called Whatever!...bless up guys, pleasure meeting you all), full out Caribbean buffet, open bar, and of course...a DJ!  So I went.  Got snazzed up for it too.  Pressed the hair, donned a pretty dress and some good shoes.  Didn't want to miss it.

I admire this man more than he probably knows.  To me he is an outstanding example for our community.  He loves God, his wife and children, his craft and his work with Correctional Services.  I just think he's an amazing guy.  To be honest, I was really just humbled to be invited to celebrate with his family.

We met several years ago when I used to host a weekly performance event downtown Toronto called La Parole.  He attended whenever he could make it.  He would share his poems, and on a couple occasions he brought his tenor pan along to play renditions of his favourite spiritual music.  It was great to have his support as I ventured out as a young no-name poet.  His presense in those memorable sessions upstairs at Flava was to me like a stamp of approval from a generation of Caribbean artists who I deeply respect and still hope to learn from.

I ended up co-editing an anthology of Black writers living in Toronto called T-Dot Griots in 2004.  Should you ever get your hands on it, be sure to read Jesse's poem,  'From "Steal" Drum to Steel Drum'.

Unfortunately, duty called before I could really party it up with the Andrews family.  It's a pity I didn't get to see Jesse and the Mrs. rent-a-tile to some back in times tunes.  I don't doubt he put some of the youngins to shame for the new songs too.

A little behind the scenes issue at the Tribal Knights band launch pulled me back into Nursekarendom for the night.  After I filled my belly.  I had to say goodbye.  Jesse introduced me to Oscar nominated film director John Singleton.  He was a guest too.  I'm sure there's a great story there, but it's completely irrelevant to the story at hand.

Jesse P. Andrews, Happy 60th Birthday!  I struggled to figure out what to offer you as a gift.  I believe you have given me so much.  For that, I will always be thankful.   Here's to at least 60 more great years of pan, poetry...and great memories!
