On De Scene : Faye Ann Crowned De Queen

>> Sunday, February 22, 2009

Lewe go back to Carnival Friday ,Yes! Faye Ann mash de place up with "Meet Superblue". Her performance was on point and it gave me goose bumps especially when she put de mic next to her belly and Junior gave his/her rendition of Superblue. It was beautiful to see Superblue himself on stage giving her performance that extra edge. I wanna commend Skinny on his "Head Bad" performance. He was one of the non-Trini artist who got an overwhelming support by the crowd. All in all, I must say that Soca Monarch was a great show which had the best of the best contending for the title.

Now ah go be honest , I reach there late with Vincy artist Tabia so I missed the groovy portion of the show but from what I heard from the Nurse it was just as great. And I am certain most of you were streaming or have viewed it already via youtube so no need to convince you that Fantastic Friday lived up to their name!
Myself, Tabia and Chrystal at Fantastic Friday

After the show , we got a taste of the sour side of Trinidad . Nurse Karen was writing up her article while at the traffic lights and this young boy took de opportunity to open the car door to try to steal her laptop . Thankfully she reacted by screaming and kicking him and saved her laptop as we were driven away. For a moment, we were all in shock , however we could not allow this to get to us. So about 6 a.m. we decide we all go have breakfast by Smokey and Bunty with the toronto-lime.com crew and Corey Graham from Boomtribe. That turned out to one big lime because everyone from Girl Power deh getting on bad to the season tunes, which was a great distraction to the ordeal faced earlier that morning.

Nurse's Lounge: Hello Barbados! Bye Bye Caribbean

>> Sunday, July 13, 2008

I'm in Barbados for a few hours. Sneaking a little time on the net at the BoomTribe.com/Alt Entertainment headquarters.

Tonight is the big WET FETE. That's the event that some would say is the real start to Crop Over. I'm about to take a stroll through Bridgetown to see if this big event is affecting the usually Sunday lull. But, first up...we'll check out the out the venue to see who might be clocking in for sound check.

Too bad, I won't be able to stick around for the show!

Nurse's Lounge: Interviewing the Interviewer

>> Saturday, June 7, 2008

I just got off the phone with Armadillo and Buddha Lizard from BoomTribe Radio in Barbados. I wanna big them up for a great little interview with Yours Truly. It's not every day that someone is asking me the questions...but today it happened twice.

We'll get back to BIM in a second, but another special shout out in order for Mark Seow of Broken Dolly Productions for featuring me in the first episode of Island Style TV on Rogers Cable 10 in Toronto. The segment was shot last month and aired this afternoon at 3p.m. Ah tell you, I wasn't sure what they kept from my long-winded mouth...so I was a little nervous about hwo it would come together. No stress though...they did a wonderful job. If you get to catch a repeat, you'll hear me discuss my work as a journalist, my passion for creative writing as a performance poet, and all about the book I co-edited called T-Dot Griots. Say what? Yeah...if you don't know about all those things, peruse my website www.mustardseeds.net

So, Dillo and Buddha Lizzard...allyuh want to know if I can wuk up? Is that a serious question? Like you asking answers. I think I'll have to arrange a little visit to Mix 96.9 FM to prove my skills. I may not have any Bajan in me, but I know what to do when I have a Bajan on me. LOL.

So, the interviews are out the way. Both were great experiences. Thanks to all of you who came along for the ride. Let me know if you got to watch or listen. And if you watching my next step...check for me tomorrow evening and every Sunday on Soca Therapy for Dr. Jay's Rounds at www.flow935.com or www.socatherapy.com @ 6:45 pm

Karen out!

(Nurse)Karen celebrates two years of soca news on the radio

>> Monday, December 3, 2007

TORONTO - The fun-loving source for all that is new in the world of soca celebrated two years on the radio on Sunday. Known to listeners as Nurse Karen, entertainment journalist Karen L. Richardson offers a light-hearted look at the devolopment of the soca genre on Flow 93.5 FM's Soca Therapy. "Dr. Jay's Rounds" was first conceptualized in August, 2005 when Richardson had just graduated journalism school. The idea was immediately pitched to 2-time SAO International Soca DJ of the year Dr. Jay and given the okay by Flow three months later. Karen L. Richardson received her Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of King's College in 2005. She has since worked in radio, television and print. Online she has contributed to Toronto-Lime.com, Boom-Tribe.com and WeMagOnline.com. She got her earliest experience working with The Vincentian, the oldest publication in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Always an avid lover of arts and entertainment, Richardson is a well-known spoken word performer. In 2004, she published and edited T-Dot Griots: An Anthology of Toronto's Black Storytellers with Steven Green. To mark the special anniversary, Richardson is launching the (Nurse) Karen (Etc) blog. The site offers The Rounds to an international online audence that may not be able to catch her on-air each Sunday. "Ever since I started the Nurse Karen character, artists have been asking me to send them updates of what I say on air. I'm looking forward to providing a way for industry personalities to subscribe and track their press. I really can't wait to interact with the listeners. It should be fun to hear their opinions on the news I cover," said Richardson. (Nurse) Karen (Etc) will be updated weekly with The Rounds scripts, and Richardson promises more! Readers can log on for special music reviews and carnival recaps, plus artist photos and video from Richardson's travels. To get in on the action visit: http://www.mustardseeds.net
