First things first, what on earth is a "tussy"?  I mean I wasn't born yesterday.  But you know the saying, when you assume you make and @$$ out of U and ME.  So I wanted to be sure.  The new track from BVI's Boston-based all-round music man shows of the artist's fondness of the double entendre.

Maybe you remember songs like "Network", "Threesome," and "Peter Piper".  It's obvious this guy has a lot of  "Tussy" on his mind!

When I asked Kamau exactly what it means.  He let his unmistakeable hearty laugh and said, "It's just a provocative spelling of Too See.

So, I dug a little further and look what I found out!!!!  Please don`t shoot the messenger.  Remember, I'm only trying to educate you.  On second thought, I`m going to make you CLICK HERE for the Urban Dictionary's definition of the word.

Free Download: Free Steelpan App brings Caribbean Culture to the iPhone

I downloaded what I think is a pretty nifty app for my iPod Touch a few weeks ago, and I have been dying to tell you about it ever since! Carnival Steel Drum by Carnival Village, brings a basic introduction to the tenor pan to your fingertips (Quite literally.) Not only do you get a pretty realistic sense of how to play pan by tapping around on the screen. They also offer a simplistic play along game a la Guitar Hero  where the player must repeated tap their finger on lit sections of the pan in order to gain points. The soundtrack is Alison Hinds` "Roll".

The sound is a melodious steelpan synth that's pretty fun to play around with, and not a shabby distraction if you've got little ones who like to play with your gadgets.  Not to mention, it makes Caribbean culture cool and accessible by blending Trinidad and Tobago's national instrument with state-of-the-art popular technology.

You know I'm all for culture!  Kudos goes out to CarnivalVillage.org.uk for the foresight and the resources spent on being the first to bring pan to the iPhone.  What's next?  A Wii game?  If allyuh do dah one, I hope I get a lil piece of the action ($$$ - in case I was being too vague)

When you travel a lot , you soon figure out that every city definitely has it's own flavour when it comes to which songs and artist are hot for Carnival.  The timing of local festivities factors in too.  So when I saw this mix from Hyper Leon, I thought a few of you might get VERY excited.  This mix shows of the top tunes of Miami Carnival 2K9, nothing more, nothing less.  If you were there....this was pretty much what they played at the fetes and on the roads.

Free Download: DJ Yung Hova Vincy Soca 09 Mix

When I was in Boston a few weeks ago, I was introduced to DJ Yung Hova. He's a Vincy Bredrin based in Brooklyn. While he completes a university degree, he's paying the bills by playing out at some of the top Caribbean spots in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. He plays all kinds of music from everywhere, but soca is in his veins...so you know he had to represent!

LUCKY for YOU...he compiled a CD of his favourite releases from Vincy Mas 2K9. It's 44 tracks of Uptempo and Ragga/Groovy Soca from a very wide variety of artists. As you know, I've seen a lot of other mixes out there, but this one comes closest in regards to showcasing the most popular songs of the 2k9 carnival season. For the most part, these were the artists booked at all the big shows. I mean, just take a peek at what you're getting! (see below)

Free Download: Sunset Mix (All Vincy) by All Is Madness

Since before I left Canada for Vincy Mas 2009, I told a few of my DJ friends that soca fans would appreciate best-of-the-best mixes from each of the summer carnivals. I mean how else will the public get to know what the top songs are, considering foreign DJs rarely play extended sets of music from these islands.

Mixes like this are great exposure for the artists, when done right. They are also great exposure for the DJ who decides to put such a mix together. Well, no matter how many times I pushed and prodded. I didn't get one from any of the big local DJs in SVG, St. Lucia, BIM, Antigua or Grenada (well, not yet anyway)!

So imagine my surprise yesterday, when I receive a message from a Toronto-based DJ of Trini descent who took it upon himself to mix together his favourite Vincy Mas tunes of 2009. It's my pleasure to offer you Sunset Mix 2009 from "All Is Maddness". Sunset...if you didn't know, is the name of St. Vincent's Strong Rum. Trust me, it's not for everyone!

Jus Maddness, thanks for doing this! Enjoying the vibes, and thanks for the big ups. One thing though...next time do me a lil favour and ease up on the reverb at the beginning! LOL...Sounding like a Martian discotheque. LOL. But don't watch that. The music is great, and you mixed it well, Papa.

Well , the result is probably different than what a homegrown Vincy DJ might have put together. But it's a nice collection of some of the biggest songs of 2009, plus a few that hardly received airplay at all. Also, a few chunes on this collection were performed by Vincentian artist, but produced for other carnival.

So, if you're new to soca...or just looking to expand your knowledge beyond your own island, get to know the names. The next step is to request the songs you like on the radio, and when you're at a fete. THEN....be sure and put your money where your mouth is, purchase original soca when you can. Deal? Deal.

Afternoon Nurse Karen Posse!!!

Tuesdays are perfect for new music. Luckily today, I'm giving you something extra special with the kind compliments of Toronto's own DJ Bass. If you live in THIS oddly humid city, then you probably know Bass as a co-host of CIUT 89.5 FM's Island Breeze Program, Friday evenings from 6 to 8 PM.

He took it over from 15-year host Jaro sometime last year...and I've got to say, he's doing a fine job of "lifting up everything and anything its path".

Several years ago...Island Breeze became a favourite weekly tradition of mine, as I would drive into the city from the West End to host my weekly open-mic event, La Parole. I would always get the latest soca...and since I usually tuned in a little bit late I was treated to the "Bass Mix" or something so. That was my DJ friend's exclusive uninterrupted weekly mashup of the best of the best.

He's always had an ear for the obscure, and never been afraid to run tunes that other DJ's may not be playing...or rather... some tunes other DJ's have never even bothered to listen to . Well, that's their problem. DJ Bass is an equal opportunity music man, sampling sounds from multiple Caribbean Islands and giving fans a chance to appreciate the music in its many facets and expressions.

So with Grenada crossing the stage for Carnival Tuesday this Morning, the Caribbean-based Summer carnivals have nearly run their full gamut. Wouldn't you say it's time for a recap of some of 2009's hidden gems?

You may not be aware that this mix represents a lot more intra-regional cross pollination than one might expect. Many of these artists are based in the US or other locales, and work with producers who wave different flags. Also, the bulk of the songs marked "T&T" were produced by Bajan producers, and released therefore for Crop Over. Working together is becoming the norm, rather than the exception...and THAT...is a very good thing.

You'll notice the selections heavily favour Bajan and Vincy releases. Clearly there are some toppa top Lucia, Antiguan, and Grenadian tunes that could easily find their home on a mix like this...but dudes...this is just ONE mix. All that means, is I'll have to hit you back with another one just now!

On De Scene: Nicole David - Release de Tiger ! (Free Download)

Nicole David, deemed as the Queen of St.Lucia Soca, is making her mark as usual. But before I go into that, I must highlight that 2009 is turning out to be a fruitful year for this soca artist and Carnival isn’t even “officially” out de gate. I am talking about her making the line up of the St.Lucia Jazz festival with likes of Chaka Khan , Estelle, Beres Hammond, Teddyson John just to name of few. At the festival Nicole was able to show her versatility and adding her own flavour, surprising the crowd with her R&B renditions .

Now back to de soca news, on Tuesday Nicole “Nikki” David's second single for Carnival was released and no disappointment there, de tune sounding real good. The first being "I eh Taking Dat", which is slowly becoming one of the women’s anthem for the season.

Rankin Morgan, one of the producers of Nicole’s “Release de Tiger” came on The Wave where he did a premiere of that track and from de first airplay, one thing I can say is “Roar”. Hope you all ready for de commotion that tune go make on de road and parties. This single was co produced by talented Leebo along with Rankin from the duo Rankin and Smokes In't. Today being only Thursday the tune has been getting great airplay and I am excited to see how it does beyond St.Lucia’s shores not only because it is the first official soca single from Rankin, but because Nicole for de past few years has not backed down and keep being consistent every single year .

As to whether she will be competing this year, it has not been disclosed nonetheless Niki has started 2009 great and no doubt the momentum will continue.

Free Download: Great Zeee's Soft Tune Riddim

Alright music fiends, I can see you salivating from here. Nasty! The Great Zee is back in 2009 with some seeeeeeeeeerious music. The Vincy posse would know him as the producer behind Hysyanz Productions, and the artist who gave you singles like "Fill You With My Love" and "The Ring".   For the rest of ya, you'd know him best from that really left-field riddim from 2008 'Juk Up Juk Up, with tunes from Slaughter, Problem, Mr. Evil, Bud Ramsey, Skinny, etc.

The Great Zeee is what you would call a renaissance man. (BTW, He will be releasing his power soca "Renaissance Riddim" later this season) He produces, sings, models, draws, and he's a pretty dope photographer too! He studied Graphical Design in London several years ago, and spends much of his time designing websites and flyers. Oh yeah, did I mention he's part of a team called "Prep Camp" that throws some jiggy club events in Brooklyn, NY? Can you say HUSTLER? Right....

No doubt, Zowi "The Great Zeee" Stapleton knows a thing or two about being creative. So today, it's all about the "Soft Chune Riddim". In Vincentian parlance (maybe other places too) a 'soft tune' refers to what others might call a 'slow jam' or 'baby-making music'. I think you get my drift. So, this one is groovy/ragga tempo. You have some more explicit tracks from

 Problem Child and Skinny Fabulous, with the real lovely dovey tings coming from Jamaican newcomer Tara and the Great Zeee himself. There is also a final track, still to come, from Trinidad's Mista Vybe.

I'm into this.  Loving the humor in Skinny's track, Problem's 'Bang Bang' hook is infectious, Tara's vocals, clean and nice, and The Great Zeee, definitely full of surprises.

Free Download: DJ Buzz B's 2KWine Let D Bumpaz Talk

It's music time.  Big up DJ Buzz B and the entire Soca Warrior Crew.  For the uninitiated, Soca Warriors are perhaps Toronto's biggest big flag crew.  When they're in a fete, everybody knows it.  They arrive early, do their stretches on the dance floor.  Then it's antics, rudeness and stamina tilm morning comes.  

So many things about the culture that surrounds soca music is pretty funny when you think of it!  These guys and gals have a rediculous amount of energy.  Honest talk, they make me feel a little old, wondering if I used to go on so...in the days when I used to worry about waking my dad when I sneaking back in from a fete.  So, I have to say groovy/ragga soca isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I hear their name.  But who am I to talk?  

Groovy is as groovy does. I got this mix about 2 week ago from one of the warriors.  I was nicely surprized to find a smooth blend of 2008 and 2009 downtempo tracks that span the entire Caribbean archipelago.  Don't be at all shocked if you catch a few songs that you've never heard before.  The fellas did their research, drawing for several sleeper tunes and occasional productions from established artists that didn't turn heads how they would have thought.

As the DJs like to say...Get familiar!  Study this playlist...maybe you'll find some new favourites!

What can I say about Jester?  Since I was in high school, I developed a deep appreciation for this sound man's ability to identify hot tunes in many genres of music.  He loves the stuff; Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, Danchehall, Soca...Jester knows the past, present and future.  So here, my soca babies, is yet another compilation of goodies from Trinidad C2K9.  However, this one is restricted to the groovy stuff (that's ragga for all you Bajans and Vincys).

Free Download: G13's Mad Decent Power Soca Mix

Got another special mega mix for all the soca heads.

This one comes to you courtesy of G13 Sound Internation out of New York.  I've secretly been fans of these guys for a while without knowing.  They love soca music from everywhere...  And I don't care if most DJs say it, they're lying. G13 actually does. Most DJs need to hear someone else run a "small island" tune five times before they feel safe playing it too. 

When I say, I didn't know I was a fan, I mean this:  I get a lot of music in my inbox DAILY.  Sometimes it's accompanied by personal messages, or bios...other times - nada.  I love music, so once I receive something with the words "soca" + "mix" eventually I'm gonna download and test it out on the treadmill.

Thanks to G13, my legs were in fine wining condition all winter long.
