Well well well, Problem Child has released his signature hybrid down-tempo early tune for Vincy Mas 2010. This time around there's a little promo video too - for the fellas!!! The song has a nice warm-up-the-party vibe to help you loosen up your waist for the rest of the night. Check it out...
If you're in Toronto like me, and you want to catch the Vincy Bad Boy live, you should check out Dr. Jay de Soca Prince's charity event, "BFF" on May 21st. Problem Child is the guest performer!
Here's a little tempo out of Trinidad three months after Carnival. Here Alves attempts to clean up the crime and corruption in Trinidad with a little soca rain. I really appreciate the message in this one. Soca doesn't have to be just about "jump and wine and misbehave." The video is humble, but effective. Maybe it's the political science student in me, but I love something for the mind in the music. Congrats Erphaan!

Now you have it folks!!! JW and Blaze with the brand new video for their mega hit....Palance!
I'm getting set to Palance all the way to Trinidad. At the air port now, headed to NY and then T&T. Watch the video and say a little prayer for my safe travels to carnival central!
At the end of the November, I let you know that Ms. Alysha was going to meet Ms. Whitney Williams for her first interview on Rango Radio. She discusses her releases for Carnival 2K10, her new website, Christmas, and playing mas! Did you get to see it?
If not, here it is! Boy.........I dunno how well I would do talking to a heap of cloth. Congrats Alysha! You're better than me!
It's Christmas Morning...and I want to wish you and more all the love, joy and peace this season has to offer! I've been busy preparing for Christmas all week, so if you've missed getting soca news, I'm so sorry!
Your continued support in the growth and development of the Nurse Karen Etc blog are appreciated! 2009 has brought blessings in the form of a sleek new format, and a cast of talented contributors who keep you up-to-date with authentic on the ground soca news.
I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with; St. Lucia's Rochelle Noel, Barbados' Corey Graham 2.0, Trinidad's Knycky Cordner, St. Vincent's Kahlil Cato, and Antigua's Aziza Lake.
Friends, the world is your oyster, so don't be afraid to show off those pearls. You've worked hard for them!
As a Christmas gift to you, I have attached a video of "Questions for Mary". It's a holiday poem I wrote and performed for an award-winning television Christmas special here in Canada.
This one comes from the winner of Synergy Soca Star Season 4. Chynee made quite a name for himself with his gimmicky performance of "They Wanna Be Like" last season. When I saw the resulting video, I have to admit I was impressed. The concept is one that I guarantee that you've never seen in a soca video before. Furthermore, attention to detail is evident in casting, costuming, photography direction, and location scouting. (Can you tell that I used to work in film and tv? LOL)
If you never watched Soca Star, the song itself may not grab you. It's pretty much a tune to introduce himself as an artiste. The content is not universal, and the vocals are passable but not perfect. That should in no way detract from this young artist's prowess as a performer. And in the business. Being a good ENTERTAINER is your bread, butter, ham and cheese. Feel me?
Atlanta's Article One enjoys taking mainstream hits and giving them a soca spin. I just found this on online today. Thought you may appreciate it.. The riddim itself isn't gonna shut down any dances, but it has some potential for smooth music genre transitions, or building early vibes. Or maybe it's just meant to entertain you for the next 3 and a half minutes. You tell me!
1. The song is popular
2. I know most of you haven't seen the video yet
3. I would like to use it to illustrate a point
Allow me to be honest with you for a moment. I'm tired hearing the same themes in Soca and Chutney "OVER and OVER"....(Benjai, you were ahead of your time). The fact that this song is about drinking rum comes as no surprise. But why not? Is there nothing else to sing about? Honestly, not being much of a drinker myself...and a bit of an intellectual at that, I tend to crave a little substance in music, in order to help us a West Indian people to elevate our consciousness using our most influential cultural medium, the music.
Instead, the trend is to make songs about stereotypical behaviour. Releasing another chutney song about rum drinking is akin to a black artiste making a song about eating chicken and watermelon. And that would be downright ridiculous, right? Well, in my opinion, it all is. Sure, carnival is about fun and revelry, but I can't imagine looking back at my career and discovering that my only lasting legacy is the glorification of alcohol use and sexual promiscuity.
DISCLAIMER: This is not an attack on Hunter. He's a decent guy, trying to continue growing his career in a tough market, where he is but a small part of a big machine that has already prescribed his role.
As we seek to take this music beyond the sandy shores of our islands to the world at large, what do we want to say? As we invest in our cultural art forms to give Caribbean youth a sense of identity and place in a shrinking world, what do with wish them to believe about themselves.
Many of you will disagree with me. Some will say I'm too serious. Others still are only interested in soca music because of its apparent lawlessness. To each his or her own. As for me, I believe our men are more than drunken limers. Maybe that's just me.
With no further ado, it's my (dis) pleasure to present to you the latest full length TV commercial for Puncheon and White Oak.
I know this video was completed about 3 months ago, but I never got around to posting it for you. This wasn't one of my favourite songs for carnival 2K9. I remember watching stage-hands hauling out excercise bikes at Soca Monarch and thinking....what is this, Spin Class? Several months later, the concept speaks more loudly to me now. It's about overcoming obstacles and fighting your daily trials with and unstoppable inner resolve....and that, I can support 100%. If you haven't seen it, do take a look at this very cinematic work directed by Sheldon Felix and Lisa Wickham.

Nurse Karen and Fay Ann Lyons (Miami - October 2009)
As we continue November's bounty of Soca artists, we wish a very happy birthday to Fay-Ann Lyons. As she turns 29, she's got to be pretty thankful for the exiting year that just passed. The Trinidadian daughter of Soca and Calypso royalty proved herself worthy of the title "princess" in the game, by becoming the 1st female in that country's history to win the Soca Monarch title. She took both International (Power) soca and Groovy only days before becoming a mom for the first time.
Happy Birtday Fay-Ann keep climbing higher!
For your viewing pleasure, I attached a video of my interview with Fay Ann for Roamin' TV in Barbados. I caught her for an in depth talk about motherhood after her Crop Over performance at Caribbean Wet Fete. Enjoy!
Ok...so I told you to remember the name Ricardo Drue, right? He's 1/4 of the all male Florida-based performance group Crossovah. Well, now you can see why for yourself.
This song premiered on "Soca Therapy" last Sunday..and it had us bumping in the studio upon first listen.
Check out this hot video for "Nah Leaving" featuring Patrice Roberts on Dwaingerous's Mario Land Riddim!
The Scorpio birthdays continue with British Virgin Island's Lincoln Ward ringing in his new year today. There's a lot of talent in Tortola. In some cases they wave the flags of the countries from which they came. In others, they just haven't been able to push to the forefront of the soca cicuit. Just remember what I tell you. That lil island in the BVI has a lot of great vocalists and musicians. Once such person is Lincoln Ward.
If you would like to send your own greetings, be sure to hit him up at twitter.com/lincolnward
Here's the video from his groovy song "The One" from 2008.
Join me in wishing Lincoln Ward a happy born day. Keep pushing forward and making great music!
Here's another one. I admit, I don't know much about this group. The sound is a little dated. Kinda reminiscent of Shurwayne Winchester's uptempo chunes 5 years ago. Nonetheless, I do applaud them for putting their faces out there. Videos definitely help raise awareness.
Thirty years ago today, St. Vincent and the Grenadines became an independent nation. For the thousands who travelled home to mark the occasion, those overseas taking time out to celebrate, and the thousands more on those beautiful islands dressed head to toe in their national colours....I salute you.
This blog is about music, soca music to be exact. If you're reading this, then you probably already know the kind of impact St. Vincent has made to the art form. None the less, I would be amiss not to educate you on just how much St. Vincent has done for this music called soca.
Our musical heritage is fierce and proud. I think of writers and arrangers like Frankie McIntosh whose work behind the scenes can be heard on endless soca classics...not just Vincy hits, innah. Songs like Lorraine by Explainer, Thunder by The Mighty Duke, Tension by Shadow, and the list goes on and on.
Then there's Granville Straker, another Vincentian who was responsible for most of the 12 inch records in your parent/grandparents collection. Brooklyn's Straker Records brought Calypso and Soca to the ears of thousands internationally, by actually recording, producing and distributing Caribbean music on wax. This is Vincy heritage...but it's general soca heritage too. I mean what would soca be if we never had recordings of Black Stalin's "Ah Feel To Party" or Shadow's "Bassman"? Those are just examples, but the legacy continues.
As Jamaican dub began to take hold of the entire Caribbean at the end of the 1980's, St. Vincent was first to utilize dub chanting in soca songs to give it a youthful, heart pounding swagger. We continued to pump out downtempo riddims for the road, and called it Ragga Soca. The Vincy contribution to soca music is certainly international, right up to the modern day. We salute a new generation of artistes for waving their flag proudly as international music contracts made Kevin Lyttle and Jamesy P into household names the world over.
We think of the veterans like Poorsah and Beckett whose countless songs tell the history of our nation with unabashed honesty, and even criticism. We remember the bands such as Touch, Asterisks, and X-A-Dus whose innovative music is responsible for what we know as the signature Vincy sound.
Thirty years later, as Sweet Vincy continues to make its humble mark on the region and the world, let us continue to work together, achieve and celebrate a bright future together.
For some reason, many people who listen to me on the radio and read my blog seem to think I'm from some place else. And even though I was born in Canada (a proud of this country as well), St. Vincent and the Grenadines is home. I am a proud Vincentian through and through. Today, I finally get to show off my pride!
To mark the occasion, I dug up a special video by one of our most talented Calypsonians, Kenneth "Vibrating Scakes" Alleyne. When's the last time you saw this one?
In view of the recent violence and tragedies going on in St. Vincent these days, I couldn't think of a better song to remind us that unity is our key to a prosperous future. Happy 30th Anniversary of Independence St. Vincent and the Grenadines!
Somewhere along the long passage from the Caribbrean to the Diaspora, young people have got the idea that real soca can only be about sex, rum and carnival. Well children...YOU'RE WRONG. Soca is not the message, but the MEDIUM. Through it there is freedom to express any number of emotions, experiences and inspirations.
The gospel community in Trinidad would know one such artiste who is doing his part to utilize soca and other genres to reach his generation with the message of Christ. Remember songs like "Baptize", and "Not In Dat"? The man's name is Jadee, a vocalist with the gospel band "Alter Call". He's celebrating his birthday today. That being said, here's my chance to say thanks to Jadee for spreading love and life through his music.
Take a look at the latest video from Jadee called "Keep On Pressing", produced by Precision Productions.
On the road of life, it's not easy to walk the same path in a different way. So Jadee...today, I join you in thanking God for another year of His grace and mercy. I wish you ongoing success as you stay faithful to your calling! Happy Birthday!
Oh boy! Crazy better watch out, like somebody coming for his humour title. Here's Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel with something new for 2010. The song is called Deputy Woman. I had the pleasure of checking it out for the first time when I was visiting his recording studio in Brooklyn last month. Ironically, his REAL wife showed me the video. Ma$tamind....you best not be checking no damn deputy woman tonight. Me and Mrs. Ma$tamind will officially team up and cut your @$$. Just sayin' !
Kudos on the video. I love the concept, and the quality. Look out for a whole set of drunken Trini men arm-in-arm singing this one as they knock back some Johnny. Oh lawd, what a sight!
