(Originally aired on Sunday, June 14, 2008 on Flow 93.5 FM "Soca Therapy")

In this edition
- RIP Sheldon Benjamin (Trinidad and Tobago)
- Slaughter Arts car accident (St. Lucia)
- Skinny Fabulous and Problem Child endorse new Caribbean rum (St. Vincent)
- Destra addresses Junior Achievement Grads (Grenada)
- Happy Birthday Uncle Sam (USA)

Good Evening Soca Lovers,

I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. Before I really get started, I have a rather tragic update on Trinidadian Music Producer, Sheldon ‘Shel Shok’ Benjamin. Sadly, on Tuesday afternoon Sheldon lost his seven month battle with non-hodgkins Lymphoma, a rare form of Cancer affecting the Lymph nodes. He was at home in Valsayn, under the care of his mother when he lost all signs of responsiveness. He was then rushed to Mount Hope Hospital and later pronounced dead, only 3 days before his 40th birthday. In his 17 year career, Sheldon released more than 300 songs. The entire Soca Therapy family wishes to extend our condolences to everyone who is feeling the loss.

Sheldon Benjamin

Four St. Lucian soca artists from the Slaughter Arts label had a close call as they were driving to the opening of Choissieul Carnival last Sunday night. Nigel Nicholas, Don Perry and Jose Torso survived the single vehicle accident with cuts and scrapes. While poor Kakle broke his arm in 2 places. None the less the fellas are in good spirits as they heal, thanks to all of their songs on the Campari Riddim getting steady air play in St. Lucia.

Down in St. Vincent, Skinny Fabulous and Problem Child are enjoying a happy carnival so far. This week the two bothers in soca picked up an endorsement deal with a brand new liquor brand called Silver Kiss Rum. Apparently, they will each represent their own unique flavor. Yum Yum.

Problem Child and Skinny Fabulous

Destra made a trip to Grenada recently. As usual, she and the band gave an amazing show at the Grenada Music festival, but she had another special gig all by herself that didn’t involve any singing at all. Instead, Destra gave the keynote address at the Junior Achievement Graduation held at St. George’s University for about 300 secondary school students. She encouraged the youth to stay in school and not to fear failure. Good advice for us all.

Destra and Nurse Karen

Special belated birthday greetings to out to Uncle Sam. Here in Toronto, his name is still more or less unknown. Maybe that’s because he’s still fairly new to the soca game, and he’s not even from the Caribbean. But in Florida audiences know him oh so well for being the white boy at reggae shows who can sing and talk patois just as well as the real deal artists. Check out his song, “It serves a purpose” on Fryktion and Kubiyashi’s sland Life Riddim.

I’m Nurse Karen and those were Dr. Jay’s Rounds. For more information on all the hot soca dish you heard here, check me out at Nurse dash Karen dot com or follow my tweets at Twitter.com/nursekaren. Now back to de Docta!

On De Scene: Celebrating the life of...

>> Monday, June 15, 2009

Last Friday 12th June. I went to Sheldon Benjamin's house, not for his wake yuh know. But I went to celebrate his birthday. You see, his family had promised him a big birthday bram & his death did not stop those plans. I love that. It was nice. Family & friends gathered to celebrate. We chatted, laughed, ate, & drank, some even shaking de lil leg to Sheldon's music in the background courtesy DJs Stone & Neil Bernard-LOL, Producer/drummer Neil turn DJ!

Today June 15th, we said goodbye to him in a more formal sedated event, his funeral. It was held at the Good Shepherd Anglican Church, Freeling Street, Tunapuna. 3pm. When I got there the church was full, though not overflowing as I had expected. Chairs, tents, & screens were set up to the sides & back of the church to accommodate the massive turn out however, there was no need for it. Could T&T have already forgotten their son? Hmmm.

The service was lovely. The eulogy was given by Sheldon's brother Garvin & he gave us an insight into a much younger Sheldon. He had the congregation laughing at some of Sheldon's lil boy antics. The Reverend gave a short but stirring sermon. He preached the way I like my funeral sermons. He spoke to US who are still alive. He spoke to us artistes especially & begged us not to let Sheldon's death be in vain. He encouraged us to pay tribute by producing songs with positive messages. He said Sheldon did his part & now we must do ours.

3 Canal sang one of their songs produced by Sheldon, "Giants". The lyrics were appropriate. Next was Russell Leonce. Me eh shame to tel alyuh daiz when ah put on meh shades. I felt a familiar tingle in my heart & eyes. Buh ah didn feel shame cause when ah glance around, ah realize Russell's song "Troubles won’t last" had the same effect on most people. I saw various degrees of “trying to wipe meh eyes witout anyone seeing”, smile. But we're too silly because that’s what a funeral is about, to say farewell till we meet again & this can entail a lil tear shedding.

Destra Garcia sang her version of "To God be the Glory". I held my breath for that one because I know Miss D can be very emotional. She held her own though & only did a lil stumble/fumble at the very end so not too dramatic.

Well the farewell is over, for some of us, but what now? How do we proceed? A few of us have started discussing a tribute song. I will keep you posted. But really, what next? Are we gonna just continue our lives as usual, as though Sheldon's death was just a bump in the road? Are we gonna take Reverend's word to heart & check within, try to be more responsible, better people?

So young, gone too soon, at least his music will live on are just a few of the phrases I've been hearing about Sheldon over the past few days. Maybe we should ask ourselves "what if it were me, have I done enough, I'm I doing enough with the role God has given me?" Do we even know what our role is? I suspect (HOPE) a lot of self searching will commence. I'm waiting to see the outcome...

Bye Socanites,

Eye Unit: Machel pays tribute to Shok at Radio City (video)

A piece of soca history was made this past Saturday in New York. Machel Montano HD gave an enormous soca CONCERT to a bunch of fans with good credit at Radio City Music Hall.

Large up LP of G13 Sound International for getting us the entire Sheldon Benjamin tribute set on video from his VERY GOOD seats!

Benjamin not only traveled as a performing member of Xtatik years ago, and again at the end of his career. Sheldon also produced some of Machel's best loved songs, including "Big Truck". (1997 Trinidad Road March)

Sheldon with Destra and Atlantik Bandmates, May 2008

Oh I dunno. This is all still a little surreal to me. This time last week, the LIFELINE commitee hadn't even staged their sound check for the concert held Sunday to raise funds for Sheldon Benjamin's medical costs.

As you know Sheldon died only two days later. Friday would have been his birthday, and Monday is his funeral. Shhheeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!

The committee has decided to redirect the monies from the Zen concert will contribute to covering the funeral and cremation costs of the deceased. Remaining money will be donated to the Cancer Society in Sheldon's honour. *Applause* I think that is a classy move.

For those in Trinidad who wish to pay their respects, the service happens 3pm, Monday, June 15th at the Good Shepherd Anglican Church in Tunapuna.

Yeah. So there it is.

Should you have any more thoughts or insight to share, you know what to do.

On De Scene: Happy 40th Birthday Sheldon,(RIP) from all of your friends

>> Friday, June 12, 2009

Had fate played out differently, Sheldon Benjamin would have been celebrating 40 years of living and creating here on this plain. God had other plans. So, today we just want to pay homage to the DJ, Producer, Technician whose music and life affected us all deeply.
Knycky was fortunate to be able to attend LIFELINE, a benefit concert held at Trinidad's Club Zen on Sunday, June 7th. There she mingled with dozens of well-wishers from the Trini music community hoping to save the life of their friend. As we celebrate Sheldon's career, let's also give thanks for the thousands he has touched and inspired with his work, imagination and confidence: the movers and shakers of the Caribbean entertainment industry.

Here are some snapshots from special evening.

Nurse's Lounge: Saying goodbye to Sheldon Benjamin

Sheldon "$hel $hok" Benjamin
June 12, 1969 - June 8, 2009

It's so hard to find the word for what I have to say. Corey called me around 3:25pm from Barbados to pass on some of the hardest news I've ever had to deliver. He received a call from the Synergy office in Trinidad informing him of some seriously bad news.

Trinidadian super music producer Sheldon "Shel Shok" Benjamin passed away this afternoon in Trinidad.

Just two nights ago an entire nightclub filled with friends, family and supporters gathered to raise money for his medical costs. Our girl Knycky was there, celebrating togetherness in an industry that can often be very cut-throat.

I have little more to say other than "goodbye". Sheldon was friendly and upbeat, always ready with a smile and corny joke and a plan to have some fun.

Over the years we had brushed shoulders in various cities and countries...and airports. We shared joys and complaints about this thing called soca. This business has caused him a lot of pain. Just a few months ago, when the illness set in, he told me that he would no longer have anything to do with it. Little did I know, he was right.

Would have liked to wish you a happy 40th b-day on Friday Sheldon. I already composed a blog post for that. But I suppose you had your own plans...and a much better party to get attend.

Sheldon, for all you gave to us through your drive and creativity, be forever blessed. May you live on in our hearts and memories as a once unsung hero steadily sought to raise our culture to higher heights.

More love in soca,

Nurse Karen

On De Scene: LIFELINE, the benefit concert for Sheldon Benjamin

>> Monday, June 8, 2009

"All these years ah complaining bout the industry not paying meh. Now look how I'm being paid, hmm" That was Sheldon "$hel $hok" Benjamin's response when I asked him how he feels about the benefit concert thrown for him. Looking at him saying this & shaking his head raised my pores...

LIFELINE the concert kicked off (more or less on time) with gospel artiste Russell Leonce. I heard he brought the house down, heard because I was a weee bit late, NOT MY FAULT! (Note to self, shopping list: Digicam, CAR!) De driver was late!!!

Anyhooo, I walked in when H! 2! 0! Phlo! was on stage, they were flowing!!! However, as I looked around, I felt Fridge from the group was justified in asking in his song "where is the love"? I was like yeah whey de love, whey de PEOPLE??? I felt disappointment ooze through my body. Buh guess wha! Dat feeling didn't last long. Trinbagonians just like to bounce in anything late late (bad) & some ah them practically came straight from the airport (good-they came), (T&T v Costa Rica match in Tobago the night before). As I was saying, by 9pm, the place was "ram-ram"( the name of one of the songs Sheldon produced for General Grant).

After the H2 Guys, host Shal Marshall introduced Robert Amar, who was once de Boss man of one of the top 10 recording studios in the world, Caribbean Sound Basin. That was where Sheldon worked when he created de setta hit nah. That studio was home to Kiskidee Caravan. Amar now owns radio 104.7FM and informed the audience that the station was having a "Sheldon night", which is a night dedicated to Sheldon's music, call, request & pledge.
DJ, Host, Presenter for the night, Shal Marshall

He started it off by pledging TT$5,000. on the spot. Another TT$5,000 went into the kitty later on when KMC made his pledge and challenged other Soca artistes. Ah waiting to hear the outcome of that, personally it should have been more-lol. I cah rise to any challenge... did I tell you guys I just bought a hip?

General "Granty" Grant

Every performer & ah not just saying this eh, but every performer MASH UP! Rocky came on after Amar & started the real jam session, he had us singing Gailann's part (cause she was in foreign), while he mocked her wine-lol. General Grant was up next..............O Gosh Granty...hmmm, hmmm, he could have stayed on de stage forever...The rest of the cast were the bands. I will not lie, I could not stay for the entire show so I saw, 3Canal, Boy (Machel) & de HD family, & a bit of Ms Hinds. Ah know real man vex now cause dey cah see pics of Destra's short shorts or de 3 Bumpers: Allison, Saucy, & Destra obsessively winning-LOL. Fellars give me a break nah. I walked, and stood, & posed fuh real long on de hip eh......

3Canal gave their usual outstanding performance . Cutting Crew, their band, REAL cutting! Sound like record & thing.

Machel Montano

The bit I did see of Machel was special. he performed hits, unrealeased hits, played the keyboards, guitar, he geh on, Patrice & de rest of de family was right up dey with him. The concert was FANTASTIC!!! According to Machel, "Big up to all de artistes for coming together to do this. We could always do with more love." I was impressed that the artistes didn't get carried away & kept the night all Sheldon. And we were encouraged in their performances, over & over to say Sheldon's name & send shouts of love & blessings. Soooo looking forward to part two.

Liz "Lady" Montano on behalf of the HD family spent the night to the front of Zen, selling black tees with a picture of Sheldon to the front & some of his hits to the back. That tee real sweet & I encourage you all to purchase one, just contact the HD family. Is only TT$100 & remember the cause.
Marlon Grant. Dancer/Choreographer, Co Host T&T's new show "Dance Off."

I heard that Musicians, performers and DJs in London had their LIFELINE UK yesterday, I wonder how that went.

On a more personal note, I want to publicly thank Sheldon for his inspiration during his difficult time. Recovering from hip replacement surgery can be trying for a person as active as I am & I wouldn't lie, I had my low periods. However, after seeing Sheldon in the hospital, then at home fighting for his life, literally, I thought "wow, I'm so blessed & have so much to be thankful for, why complain?" You know the saying I cried when I had no shoes, then I saw a man with no feet. Yep, that was me...

Thanks to everyone that is supporting with prayers, finance & in every little way. Sheldon's Mum has said to me, the support the family is getting, from transportation to visits to every little detail has been tremendous.

Keep praying guys. We need a miracle...

Part 3 soon...

On De Scene: A little about Sheldon Benjamin...

(Part 1 of a special series on the LIFELINE Concert)

Sheldon Benjamin is a Producer/songwriter. He's responsible for Allison Hind's Massive hit "ROLL IT". He has also produced bombers for Machel Montano, 3Canal, Mr Vybe, Ms Alysha, Surge, Ghetto Flex & Rocky, (breathe), Precious, Ataklan, Denise Belfon, Iwer George, Bunji Garlin, Maximus Dan, Gailann, Benjai, David Rudder, (breathe) S.W Storm, Candy Hoyte & Eddie Charles, Destra Garcia, Ajala, Oh gosh, so many more... and how could I leave out my first big tune "FED UP"! Yep, Sheldon too.

Think back to the days of Kiskidee Caravan, Remember "SHOT CALL" by General Grant, "Dan It up" Yard Fowl Crew, "Ambush" Supa-Chile, "Dis Trini Could Flow" Kindred, Ozzie Majic, Black Mayle, well that's also some of the artistes & hits Sheldon started producing. According to the facebook page "keeping Sheldon Benjamin in our prayers" his work was recognised by Billboard magazine which called his remix of Shot Call, "very innovative and noteworthy"...Impressive huh...

Sheldon has recently been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Sunday June 7th, a benefit concert called LIFELINE organized by the committee of the same name was held at Club Zen. The proceeds to go towards Sheldon's medical bills & The Cancer Society Of Trinidad & Tobago. In my next blog, I'll tell you how the concert went...

On De Scene: LIFELINE artists take over Synergy Friday Nights

>> Saturday, June 6, 2009

For musicians & music lovers, Friday Night is Synergy night in sweet T&T, you can get any info about the latest parties, artistes etc. Last night, however, looked like it turned into Sheldon Benjamin night! Oh Guuud! According to Rupee, "Look...at...PEOPLE!" Well artistes. Yes man, we went out in our numbers for what was a sort of a live infomercial for Sheldon's Concert. Well really, it was Synergy Friday Nights hosted by Shal Marshall, but with the Sheldon twist.

This initiative was put together by the LIFELINE committee, Shira Mohammed, Neil Bernard, Rocky, Lyndon Livingston, Klysha Best, Tamara Carpette, Giandre Diaz & Signal To Noise. I must also say thanks to Wendell Naipaul & the Synergy crew for their support.

Some of the artistes present were Machel Montano, Shurwayne Winchester, Blaxx, 3 Canal, Rocky, Denise Belfon, & King David. We were all suppose to sing our favorite track produced by Sheldon-yours truly forgot her CD with my song "Life" or "Fed Up" & had to sing Wet Meh -- planned? Nah! Ah forget real thing at home, will get to that.

The artistes truly represented. Everyone was in high form, but special mention must be made of Granty (General Grant). It's been a while since I saw Granty perform, and allyuh...he better than ever! He had us in the studio rolling & shot calling (remember de dance?) with him. I could only imagine what those at home were doing...

Now ah really cah wait for Sunday (7th June) evening when the real Concert is on...

Now here this aside...Amm, amm, I forgot the DIGITAL Camera at home. Yes man, ah get one. Well borrowed. Yes it was still on the bed, with meh performance CD. How could I? When leaving home, note pad, Camera, note pad, camera, notepad, camera. make it stick!

Anyhow, the ever so sweet committee members, organized a camera for me & were suppose to send me the pics since last night! Ah still waiting. This report couldn't wait so I'm going full speed ahead & if I do get the pics after, I promise to post just for you.

Speaking with Camille, Sheldon's sister, after the show, I learnt Sheldon enjoyed the show. And was most concerned for me and the hip when ah start to throw water. LOL.

The Rounds: International Calypso Monarch is coming!

>> Monday, June 1, 2009

(Originally aired on Soca Therapy on Flow 93.5 FM, Sunday, May 31, 2009)

In this edition:
  • Berlin Carnival
  • Vincy Soca Dans Launch
  • St. Lucia Carnival press launch
  • TUCO planning an International Calypso Monarch Competition
  • RIP Lady Guymine
  • Sheldon Benjamin out of hospital
  • Alison Hinds holding web design contest
Good Evening Soca Lovers, I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds!

This was a busy week in the soca world as the Summer carnival season begins to unfold in fine style. Berlin Germany lit up with some hot soca action this weekend, for its Carnival of Cultures. Thanks to Germany’s number #1 soca sound, the Soca Twins, people like Kevin Lyttle, Maximus Dan, Marlon Asher and Jah Melody made the trip to Europe to take part in the festivities. I thought I should note that all dem man dey was on truck number NINETY SEVEN in the parade of the bands. Is it just me, or does that mean, Carnival in Germany is much bigger than we would have expected?

Nurse Karen with Germany's Soca Twins

In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Friday evening a group known as the LIME Vincy Soca Dans gave a huge free show in Heritage Square for all their fans. Record numbers turned up to see Luta, Jamesy P, Fireman Hooper and Tabia perform one of their first full length sets together for the season. Katalyst flew in from Barbados for a special appearance to perform her new duet with Luta. Great reviews so far!

Meanwhile in St. Lucia, the CDF held a press launch for St. Lucia Carnival 2009 on Friday. They announced an increase in police presence this year to ramp up security at all official events....dot dot dot....beginning Monday. Monday is the official start of Lucian carnival . The fun starts at 3pm in Castries. Mas bands will be out registering revellers. Sponsor will be bombarding the people with promotions and the like, then some time around 5 pm, the performances will start. Local Calypso and Soca acts will feed the hungry crowd right into the night!

Speaking of Calypso, the Trinidad Unified Calypsonians Organization has begun wheeling and dealing to put together an International Calypso Monarch Competition! The idea is a to create a larger platform for Calypsonians throughout the region to showcase their art. A memorandum of understanding was signed last week to launch the inaugural event this October in Sint Maarten! They decided that a date in the Fall would be a better choice than waiting for the 2010 Trinidad Carnival season, since October falls after almost all of the Caribbean based carnivals have concluded. Sounds like somebody’s thinking down there.

The Guyanese calypso community around the world is in a more sombre mood this weekend as it mourns the passing of one of its true cultural ambassadors. Female Calypsonian, Monica Chopperfield aka Lady Guymine died on Thursday of natural causes. I first told you about her health issues last September when a group of West Indians in New York, including Winston Soso and Sugar Aloes came together to raise cash for her medical costs. Lady Guymine made her debut as a Mashramani Calypsonian back in 1965. Her talents were noticed by The Mighty Sparrow, who invited her to Trinidad to perform in his Calypso tent. She did so for two years. Then continued her nearly 4 decade career touring the Caribbean, and the US. I want to offer my condolences to the entire Chopperfield family for their loss at this time. May the legacy live on!

Before we get stuck on the bad news, here’s something to make you smile. Music producer, Sheldon “Shel Shok” Benjamin came home from hospital on Thursday. If you remember he’s recovering from Cancer affecting the lymph nodes. He’s doing much better, and will hopefully be well enough to attend the LIFELINE benefit concert in his honour and aid at Club Zen this coming weekend.

Before I bounce, I know the times are tough. And a few of you out there might be looking for a job! I got some good news. Soca queen Alison Hinds is in the market for a new design for Alison Hinds dot com. SO, if you think you can handle de wuk. There’s a contest going on right now. Email black coral contest at gmail dot com to enter. You’ve got till June 8th. Good Luck!

I’m Nurse Karen and those were Dr. Jay’s Rounds. For more information on all the items you heard today. Find me online at Nurse dash Karen dot com, or nursekaren on Twitter and I’ll be happy to fill you in. Now, back to de docta!

The Rounds: Memorial Day long weekend soca round up

>> Monday, May 25, 2009

In this Edition:
  • Memorial Day Long weekend soca events in the US- Rupee, Machel and Destra
  • Carnivals: San Franciso, Orlando, Atlanta
  • LIFELINE Concert for Sheldon Benjamin (Trinidad)
  • Happy Birthday Mr. Slaughter
Good Evening Soca Lovers, I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. With weather like this, don’t you just feel like jumping up? Well you’re not alone! A whole slew of Caribbean based soca acts made their way to the United States this weekend for endless soca action. Rupee and the Request Band got up close and person with fans in Manhattan with a big show at SOB’s on Thursday. Then it was off to Queens on Saturday for a fete at Mangoville.

Today (Sunday), Machel is in California at the UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival, while Destra and her big band will be the only soca act amidst all the reggae riddims rocking Miami this evening for Best of the Best.

Machel and Nurse Karen (Miami 2008)

For the die hard soca massive in the US of A, there are a handful of great carnivals keeping the Caribbean spirit alive this weekend. So gotta big up Orlando, San Fran, and Atlanta!

In 21 years of Atlanta Carnival, I’m told that one of its most unique characteristics is that you simple can not ignore the influence of some of the smaller islands. I hear that St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica and the VI crew ruled J’ouvert hands down!!

Down in Trinidad, friends and loved one of music producer Sheldon Benjamin are hard at work preparing a benefit concert for the ailing musician. A few weeks ago I mentioned that Sheldon is depending on YOUR good vibes to recover from cancer (Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma). Since my first report, I’m told that his spirits are up. He’s also been blessed to be visited in hospital by several of his closest friends in the soca business. The one thing about tough times is that they bring good people together. So, here’s the latest...an All-star fundraiser called LIFELINE has been planned to raise money for Sheldon’s mounting medical costs.

The event will feature performances by Alison Hinds, Destra, Machel and more at Trinidad’s Zen Nightclub on June 7th. If you want to donate cash, but can’t make it to the big event, an account has been set up to accept donations. For more information check out the Nurse Karen Etc blog, or join the Sheldon Benjamin Facebook Group. We can fight this together!

Mr. Slaughter and Nurse Karen (Trinidad 2008)

Before I go, I must send a send Happy Birthday Big UP to Mr. Derek Perreira aka Dawg E Slaughter. He will be celebrating 33 years on earth this Thursday!

The Rounds: Teddyson John sings with the greats at St. Lucia Jazz

>> Monday, May 11, 2009

In this edition:

  • Soca/Calypso honoured at the 2009 IRAWMA's
  • Callaloo and Toronto Revellers launch their 2009 Caribana Presentations
  • Teddyson John sings with blues greats at St. Lucia Jazz
  • Grenadian calypsonian charged with rape
  • Sheldon Benjamin aka Shel Shok in hospital with cancer

Good Evening Soca Lovers,
I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. First, lemme hit you with a big fat Happy Mother’s Day!

Last week, I mentioned that the International Reggae and World Music Awards were taking place in NY during soca therapy. Well, the results are in, so I have to big up one awesome Caribbean mom for her success. Congrats goes out to Alison Hinds for winning the award for Best Calypso/Soca Entertainer.

A handful of other soca related awards were bestowed as well. Machel Montano HD took Most Outstanding Stage Personality and Most Outstanding Show Band. Trinidad’s Calypso Rose won Most Consistent Entertainer. Antigua’s King Short shirt was inducted into the IRAWMA Hall of Fame. the Mighty Sparrow was honoured with the Master of the Caribbean Award, and Vincentian record mogul, Granville Straker received the Martin’s International/Inter-Culture Award of Honor.

Back on the home front, Callaloo and Toronto Revellers now join the ranks of mas bands who have unleashed their 2009 themes on the city of Toronto. Marlon Singh’s Callaloo will be parading down the lakeshore with an India and Africa theme called :The Ganges Meets the Nile. All 12 hundred of Jamaal Magloire’s Toronto Revellers will be band # 6 presenting Brasil: Bacchanal in Rio.

The big party in the West Indies right now is St. Lucia Jazz. Yesterday, Groovy soca artiste, Teddyson John gave crowds something to talk about when he took the stage to sing the blues. He performed on a bill that included music greats like George Duke, Jeffrey Osborne, and James Ingram.

Bad news out of Grenada, I mean really bad news. Maybe you’ve heard. The 2008 National Calypso Monarch, 24 year old Biko Lewis has been charged with the rape of a 15 year old girl. It was reported that the victim was on her way to church when the offended offered her a ride. Well, as you might guess, she never made it to her intended destination. Instead she was brought to a secluded location where the act was commited. Now word on sentencing yet, but I personally hope he pays big time.

On a rather somber note, Trinidadian soca producer, Sheldon Benjamin once known as Shel Shok was rushed to the hospital on Thursday due to complications resulting from his fight with Lymph Node Cancer. The 39 year old sample technician who has toured extensively with Destra and Machel Montano over the years has been privately battling the disease since November. But a mild heart attack and breathing difficulties brought his quiet struggle to the public sphere. We at soca therapy offer our sincerest thoughts and prayers out to Sheldon for a speedy and full recovery.

Booster Shot: Soca producer Sheldon Benjamin in Hospital with Cancer

>> Saturday, May 9, 2009

Trinidadian Producer, Sheldon Benjamin's private struggle with cancer sudddenly turned public this week when breathing problems led to his being rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex on Thursday night.

He has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma,it is characterized by larger than average lymph node, weight loss and fever. It is the medical term for cancers that attach the white blood cells.

Benjamin suffered a mild heart attack. When he arrived at the hospital his lungs were filled with fluid. He was placed in the intensive care unit when doctors realised his lungs were filled with fluid and that he had experienced a mild heart attack.

Benjamin told the Trinidad media that he is confident that he will be able to beat his disease. I certainly hope so too! It is reported that he first noticed the a problem last November when spotted a rash on his face. However, I noticed the rash as early as the first week of October 2008, when he was in Miami for Carnival performing with Machel Montano HD.

Take a look at this photo of Sheldon and me at the University Fete in Miami. Bear in Mind, the producer is only 39 years of age and usually has a clear complexion.

Perhaps you can see the difference when looking at this photo of Sheldon with Destra and her band from May 2008

Benjamin, who for years was known to the public as Shel Shok over the years worked as a DJ, Producer and sample technician in bands such as Xtatik and Atlantik. He has produced an impressive cache of hits by artistes like Beenie Man, Allison Hinds, Machel Montano,David Rudder, Maximus Dan and a host of others.

Towards the end of 2008, he made the decision to permanently distance himself from the nickname Shel Shok, and soca music claiming that it has brought him nothing but trouble.

He spoke to me about the name situation and his illness for my last "Q&A" post. READ IT HERE

My heart really goes out to Sheldon. He is a talented and eccentric guy, who has always been very supportive of my efforts. Which I am very thankful for. We even made plans to use one of his beats on my upcoming poetry album.

Sheldon, wishing you a speedy recovery! I know you can do it. You've been strong through tough times before! We're all praying for you to return to full health and strength!

Love and Soca,

(Nurse) Karen

The Rounds: Miami Carnival Round Up

>> Monday, October 20, 2008

Good Evening Soca Lovers,

It's good to be back here with you this Sunday, after a brief absence. While most of you were gathering to celebrate thanksgiving. I was giving thanks for carnival Miami style. The trip had me taking a small wine at both Broward and Miami Carnivals. I also got to see performances from Big Bands like Red Hot Flames. Machel Montano HD, Krosfyah, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Asylum, and Traffik. It was a veritable who's who of the soca industry. And I have to say is, All the artists all brought their "A" game.

Now while we on the topic of game...lemme fill allyuh in on one of our Toronto native sons who recently took up residence in the beautiful city of Miami. I'm talking about Miami Heat Center, Jamaal MaGloire...who we all know as the bandleader of the two-time Caribana band of the year title winning mas band, Toronto Revellers. Yes, I saw the man. After all that is to be expected. Jamaal loves carnival. But I have a little bad news. Jamaal who is vying for a starting line-up position with his new team the heat, is forced to sit out for 4 to 6 weeks due to a pretty bad hand injury that happened not long ago at an exhibition game in Paris. The man is sporting a cast on his left hand the size of a boxing glove. It doesnt' get in the way of wukking up...but it doesn't really help him play basketball, if you catch my drift.

Being in Miami had it's obvious advantages. Scoop scoop scoop!!! I wanted to break this news to you all last weekend, but the details have since been leaked online via my blog Nurse Karen Etc. Let me fill you in.

First, If you're heading to Trinidad Carnival for 2009, you can expect to see a Bajan Soca Veteran performing alongside Bunji Garlin and Faye-Ann Lyons in the Asylum Band. Clean out your ears and listen good. Edwin Yearwood will be performing with Asylum for the 2K9 carnival season. No, I didn't stutter. Please note. He's not leaving Krosfyah or anything crazy like that. Hes just making sure he's fully in the mix for Trinidad next year.

What else? Check this: Sheldon Shel Shok Benjamin is no longer a member of Atlantik. I caught him in Miami running samples for Machel Montano HD. I asked him about it...and he confirmed that he has been DISMISSED. Big word...but what does it mean? Machel and they went Bahamas the other day. Shel Shok went with them...and his former band found out while he was away. Not cool. Fact is Atlantik has not been touring as much as they used to, and Benjamin felt justified in picking up some work on the side. Let's say he and management weren't on the same page on that one. Everything is alright. Atlantik is on the case. Marlon Roach has taken over in the samples department, and I've heard he's already doing a GREAT job.

In other news, the Soca Awards were held last night in St. Kitts. The press department hasn't issued a release as yet with complete results as yet. But, as always I'm on it.

Before I go, special congratulations to Island Boyz on 15 years of soca events in Toronto. The rang in the occasion last night at Palazzo with a special show from Kes the Band, Nadia Batson, Mr. Dale and Maximus Dan.

Booster Shot: Changing Tides in Atlantik

>> Friday, October 17, 2008

OK...here's a little addendum to the story this week about Sheldon "Shelshok" Benjamin's departure from Atlantik.

I was doing my usual fishing around among Trinidad-based sources very close to the band. Here are a couple of quick facts.

- This is new thing. Benjamin travelled to The Bahamas with Machel Montano HD for a show at Wyndham Crystal Palace Ballroom on October 3rd, 2008. Atlantik only discovered that he intended to take outside gigs when he was already in the Bahamas.

- Atlantik has replaced Shelshok. The new samples man is producer Marlon Roach of Madmen Productions. He was already a member of the band. His replacement is no stranger to major soca bands. None other than Slick D. He was a member of Xtatik, and has also accompanied Bunji Garlin in years gone by.

Booster Shot: Shel Shok dismissed from Atlantik

>> Sunday, October 12, 2008

Superstar soca producer Sheldon Shel Shok Benjamin is turning a few heads this weekend in Miami. Why? Well, because he's actually here and Destra and Atlantik are not. Benjamin is...or should I say WAS the samples guy for the big band. Granted he is a grown man, so he can go wherever the heck he wants, right? That would be the case if the man who brought us Alison Hinds' Roll, and Daville's Turning Me On was in Florida for a beach holiday.

Nurse Karen with Shel Shok at UWI Fete Miami, Grand Palms Resort, 2008

But let me assure you Mr. Benjamin is definitely not here on vacation. I ran into Shok last night at UWI fete performing on stage with Machel Montano HD. The HD camp rolled into town this weekend with a couple of major gigs lined up, couple of major gigs on the docket including Socavivor: International Flag Party, UWI Fete and, HD Miami at 90 Degrees.

Machel Montano and Nurse Karen at UWI Fete Miami

However, Shok was not permitted to take on any gigs with any other bands while performing as a touring member of Atlantik. So, going to Miami was a definite no-no.

I asked him what happened:

"They said if I go to do the gigs, forget about them. So I went to the gigs. We were not working anywhere so the income was needed," said Sheldon Benjamin.

It doesn't take a soca analyst like MOI to realize that our friends in Atlantik have been noticeably absent from the last couple of major soca limes. No New York. No Miami. No Notting Hill? (....somebody please confirm that one.) The fact is, it costs big dollars to book Atlantik at a time when many bands have been negotiating down their asking price to ensure that they have a presence on the scene. Naturally, there are more factors at play than price alone....however, whatever the reason, Shok's dismissal is evidence that the musicians are beginning to feel the pinch.

Destra with Atlantik Band in Toronto, 2008

Benjamin will not disclose whether the current arrangement with Xtatik is a temporary fill-in situation or a permanent return to his former band Xtatik. Guess you'll have to keep coming back to (Nurse) Karen (Etc) to find out!

The Rounds: Red Hot Flames album about to drop...SCYATTAH!!!!

>> Monday, June 23, 2008

Good Evening Soca Lovers,

I'm Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay's Rounds. The calendar says it's summer now, and all attention focuses on the Caribbean. If you're looking for me this time next week I will be in sweet St. Vincent and the Grenadines preparing the place for Dr. Jay's arrival.

Belated birthday greetings to Sheldon "Shel Shok" Benjamin. of the big band Atlantik. I missed you last rounds, but we'll catch up next weekend at Insomnia in SVG.

Some of Atlantik liming at GLOW SVG last year.
(Shel Shok is the long one in the back!)

Last week's ragga soca monarch competition proved to be a big upset at Victoria Park. Zoelah fans: if you haven't heard by now, your girl's performance of Wine Up On Me simply did not cut it for the judges, leaving her out of the top 3. From all accounts Zoelah, who had performed at Wet Fete (in the rain) the night before was sounding PRETTY hoarse. So top marks went to Dani-O instead, who shocked onlookers with a stellar performance of Gimme Mo. Next up was Skarypon with Forever, and Galanaire in third place with "Do YOU"

Summer time means summer music, so if you haven't already picked up your copy of Soca Gold 2008, now would be the time to make that happen. It's currently ranked #1 on the Billboard Reggae charts (Dah don't really make sense to ME, but whatever!) VP records chose big tracks from Big Artistes like Mr. Dale's Soka Junkie, Faye-Ann Lyons – Get On, and Ricky T "Pressure Boom!"

2008 TT Road March Queen Faye-Ann in Toronto last month

Right around Caribana time, our friends in Antigua will jumping up in the hot sun as well. So, naturally, that means a new batch of jam band music is cooking up as we speak. Look out from a new album from Red Hot Flames. Oungku is real excited about the CD. The title will either be called SHAOLIN TEMPO (you know how West Indians love dey Kung Fu) OR it may be called "SCYATTAH"! He says this album is going to be a musical bomb – A weapon of Mas' disruption, so that's what people will do when it drops! Look for it the first week of July!

I'm Nurse Karen and those were Dr. Jay's Rounds. Take a moment to check out (Nurse) Karen (Etc) at Mustard Seeds dot net over the next three weeks, as I keep you up to date with my Vincy Mas diary. I'll also be taking in St. Lucia's soca monarch finals, to stay tuned for pictures and video from that! Now, back to de docta...
