Originally aired on Sunday, March 7th, 2010 on Flow 93.5 FM (Toronto) Soca Therapy with Dr. Jay de Soca Prince.

In this edition:
- Alton Bertie recognized at Top 7@ 7 awards. (B.V.I)
- Bacchanal Jamaica Carnival warms up (Jamaica)
- The Return Fete is a hit (Canada)
- Happy Birthday to Kees Dieffenthaller
- Doneo and Problem Child, the Party Hard Saga (UK, St. Vincent and the Grenadines)
- Fire Empress Video Shoot (Tobago)

Good Evening Soca Lovers,
I'm Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay's Rounds.  I have always made a point to recognize excellence in soca.  I just believe that when we start to celebrate ourselves, the rest of the world will also.
Last night was the Top 7@ 7 awards in British Virgin Islands, a show that honours songs and artistes who made it to the number one position  on a popular radio station’s daily charts.  Local producer, Alton Bertie received an award for his contribution to the music industry, particularly as an in house instrumentalist and producer for Shuwayne Winchester and Y.O.U.

Bachannal Jamaica Carnival is underway for 2010.  The crowds at the weekly Mas Camp shows have already been treated by amazing stage performances and dj shows from  the likes of Zoelah,  Mr. Slaughter and Kes the Band.  The season has only just begun though.  Jamaica will be host to a lot more international artistes before it culminates on Sunday, April 11th. Next up Alison Hinds on March 12th.

Well it may not be Carnival time here in Toronto, but if you know anything about the love this city has for soca, you know that we don’t wait for Caribana to enjoy the very best in Soca Music.  That’s why some 3000 people packed into Koolhaus last night to see Swappi, Blaxx, Shal Marshall, JW and Blaze...and uh....Cookie Monster...all supported by Kes the Band.  That was a fantastic show.  If you missed it, shame on you!
JW, Nurse Karen and Blaze at Toronto Return Fete (2010)
The ladies, were certainly excited to experience lead singer Kees again for the first time since Caribana.  If you liked the show, be sure to holler at him on Facebook, and wish him a happy birthday while you’re at it.  On Friday, March 12th, it’s your boy’s birthday!!!

This past week the internet was on fire with some hot new bacchanal surrounding the song “Party Hard” by UK house and hip hop artist/producer Donaeo featuring Problem Child.  Well, if you didn’t know..The version that features Problem Child wasn’t exactly recorded with the blessing of the original artist.  Two weeks after the close of Trinidad Carnival, Doneo now knows that his song was a pretty much the only reason Problem Child had a major following at all the big fetes, problem is...(no pun intended), the version was unauthorized....and Donaeo never got the opportunitiy to cash in on Trini Carnival for himself. Well, as of now, there hasn’t been any real talk of legal recourse...but the Vincy Road March King is suffering from a major assault on his character, that which brought him to tears in a YouTube video released a few days ago.  Ah well, let this be a lesson in better business for all of us.

Last quick fact, Tobago Soca Monarch Fire Empress is shooting a video shoot tonight at a watering hole called Bar Code. Looking forward to seeing the outcome.

The Rounds: What Soca artists wish for 2010

>> Monday, January 4, 2010

Good evening soca lovers, I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jays rounds. Happy 2010! It’s a new year here at Soca Therapy and I look forward to bringing you the latest insider information from the soca world every Sunday...just like you’ve come to expect.
This year already proves to be a busy one for many soca artists with Carnivals wrapping up in the Bahamas, St. Kitts, Monserrat and St. Croix...and carnival bubbling to a boil in Trinidad, Dominica and Guyana.
BVI soca artist and producer Kamau brought his brand of music to St. Croix for New Years, performing jazz saxophone at one event and jamming with a traditional band at another.

Montserrat Festival went on, despite the recent threats posed by the Soufriere volcano. Some describe carnival as Bottom in De Road. When I caught up with Scrappy a few days ago, he described it as ``ASH`` in the air. (That`s A-S-H, by the way....this is a family show)
Slammer Cutter should be taking a rest today after a video shoot last night on the Danforth.

Umi Marcano rang in the new year at a gig in New York, but he's wasting no time. Now that he`s back in Trinidad, Today is all about shooting his second music video for the season, "Folk Reality".
Trinidadian reggae artist Junior Don is making a foray into the soca arena for 2010. He’ll be gigging with Peter C and the Orchestra as a frontline vocalist.

Peter C in Miami 2009

Before I forget, lemme say Happy Birthday to Peter C Lewis formerly of the Xtatik band. He turns 38 today in Trinidad. But he`s not the only one celebrating both a personal new year and the public one...Bajan soca twins Barry and Bruce Chandler rang in their 26th birthday on December 30th, while Lucian former monarch Mantius also celebrated his arrival on the planet that very same day.
I hurried through the other items, in order to share something I read today that inspired me. The Trinidad Express Newspaper asked some local entertainers what they wish for 2010. Here's what a few of them had to say:

Fay-Ann Lyons (soca artiste): ’My wish is for peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind. I also pray that my daughter grows up to be a loving and joyful little lady. For the nation, I pray that there will finally be a reduction in crime and for my family, I wish that we will all be happy and learn to truly love each other.’

Blaxx (soca artiste): ’Most importantly I wish that my fellow artistes will seek to have better lyrics in their songs and be more responsible. Some of them are not setting good examples for the younger ones wanting to come into the arena because of the sexual and violent lyrics. I also really want to see something serious done about the crime situation. All my other wishes have come true already. I got married and I have good music for the season.’

Blaxx and Nurse Karen in Toronto (August 2008)
Kees Dieffenthaller (artiste/musician): ’I always want the same thing every year and that is to really push the music of Trinidad and Tobago and achieve something on a global scale. This year we are working to get closer to that realisation. Also, for a developing Trinidad, things will be even tighter financially next year with the recession and I really hope we don’t lose our sense of community and spirit of giving because of these tough times. I pray that we would not forget our neighbours as we seek to get ours in those tough times and we will look out for each other. As for crime, as we work to that 20/20 vision, with growth come bigger problems such as crime. We are losing that village lifestyle where everyone raised the children. Listen to what the children and youth are saying.’

Iwer George (soca artiste/owner Soca 91.9FM): I pray for a miracle as far as crime is concerned, that the murder rate will read minus zero at the end of 2010. I would also like to see more young soca artistes get an opportunity to make it. For me, I am hoping that God will deliver what I have asked Him for, it’s a personal thing, in the coming year.

Eye Unit: Kes the Band - Stalker (Video)

>> Tuesday, July 28, 2009

When I was in Trinidad last month shooting the breeze with Simon at Question Mark Entertainment, he let me in on their intension to try for a little cross over exposure with a Kes the Band song entitled, "Stalker".

The pop-rock type song was, until now, an album cut on KTB's "On in 5" album released right around carnival time in Trinidad. If you don't already have the album, it's well worth the money you'll spend. Beyond, Kees' Dieffenthaller's expert vocals, you'll get an ecclectic mix of styles that pays tribute to the wide variety of musical styles influencing this very versatile band.

As for Stalker, hmmm. The track, brought to us by the South Trinidad/Brooklyn, NY dynamic duo at Precision Productions (Kasey Phillips and Nikholai Green), well it's not soca. So doh cuss me when you watch the vid. As I clearly stated, the idea is to push the band into opportunities for exposure that extend beyond the regular post-carnival Caribbean and West Indies ex-pat circuit. What you get in comparative terms are verses that could easily perfect a late night iPod shuffle with Tessanne Chin, and a chorus that sends me somewhere back to the 1980's with Phil Collins and Genesis.

Let's not all gasp at once! The rock sound is in keeping with KTB's musical tastes, and the boys at Precision, they not exactly run of the mill jump and wave Trinis either (if there is such a thing). Even while Kasey and Nikholai have ascended the production ranks to make a major impact on their nation's Carnival soundtrack in recent years, it's obvious dem boys love they Hip Hop bad bad. Their music adds a decidedly urban flavour to , which has opened doors to work on projects for artistes in Trinidad, Grenada, St. Lucia, the US and beyond.

Anyho, ladies, enjoy watching Kees get run down by a chick who's not really acting that much different than most of you. (If the shoe fits...LOL) On a serious note, the lyrics describe a megafan. She only crosses the line in the visuals. I'm sure most Caribbean acts would be happy to have fans who look that good, request every song, come to every show, and wait for them backstage. Isn't that why half of these artistes get into the business in the first place?

With no further ado.....I present you "Stalker"

Just to keep your music production chops well sharpened, I copied down the discography from Precision Productions to give you a lil taste of what these boys been up to. (And because, I know Kasey gonna Skype me if I don't).

Eye Unit: Happy Birthday Kees!

>> Saturday, March 14, 2009

Kees rang in his 28th birthday on March 12th.  Friends and family threw him a  suprise birthday party at Port-of-Spain's 51 Degrees night club.

Thursday is Karaoke night at 51.  The highlight of the birthday lime was a performance of Sparrows "Congo Man", by Kees' dad  Bunny Dieffenthaller.  Now it's proven music is the root of that family tree.  Kees' mom is a classical musician, brothers Jon and Hans play instruments in Kes the Band, and well Daddy, he may end up the next Trinidadian Idol.

According to the Trinidad Guardian, it was hard to get Kees to his party.  He insisted that he wanted to spend a quiet evening.  However, the friend who accompanies him faked an emergency bathroom pit stop.  Needless to say, he took the bait. Also...needless to say...dat had to be a woman, cuz he wouldnta stop de car for no man who needed to buss a piss!  ...I'm just saying.  Sorry ladies...

Somebody had to tell you.

Well Kees, Happy Birthday!

For all the sad ladies, I pulled something to make you smile.

Here's Kes the Band performing Our Prayer

The Rounds: Kes the Band members debut on the small screen

>> Sunday, May 11, 2008

Good Evening Soca Lovers, I'm Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay's Rounds. First I want to wish a very happy mother's day to all the women out there influencing others to be their best. And to all the mommy's of the soca therapy family, we feel so blessed to have you in our lives.
Just one week to go until Soca or Die, and I know allyuh can't wait. All the soca crews are making sure to get plenty sleep this week, because next weekend is two nights of fete.
Sunday night headliners Bunji Garlin and Faye-Ann Lyons are in Germany this weekend for Berlin Carnival. There has been an active soca subculture in that city for years, but the 2006 World Cup of Football made true soca warriors out of everyone. Assylum Band is mashing up as I speak…next stop Toronto!
Nadia Batson is due to perform here next Sunday too, but she left Trinidad on Thursday with stops in New York and LA. It's a busy time for Nadia and her fellow band mates in Kees the Band. Digital sampling dude, Richard Balgobin is the new host of Synergy TV's Chutney Star. It just premiered on Thursday in T and T. Meanwhile Kees and Nadia are gearing up for the debut of The Reef. I first told you about it in February. These talented singers, will be showing off their acting chops in a brand new dramatic series to air on Channel Six in Trinidad.
Other Caribbean locales can take it in on MTV Tempo. And in the New York City Tristate area, look for it on CIN 73. Allyuh lucky! The rest of us will have to HOPE to eventually catch a glimpse on YouTube.
So the 27th annual International Reggae and World Music Awards went down last weekend at the Apollo. Machel was pretty popular that night, even though the show celebrates musical achievements in Reggae, Soca, Reggaeton, Soukous, Salsa and Compas. Machel won the coveted Bob Marley Entertainer of the year award plus two others, to make him the night's biggest winner.
Buju Banton won the award for Most Educational Entertainer last week. And Last NIGHT he had a sold out gig at Madison Square Garden with fellow reggae stars Super Cat and Barrington Levy. Upcoming groovy soca sweet boy Kevon Carter wooed the audience with the sweetest soca vibes. So, if you didn't know that name, you might want to get familiar. It won't be the last time.

Good Evening Soca Lovers,
I'm Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay's Rounds.

Have you ever felt the pain of heart break? Ever wished you could get something back that you know is gone forever. Around here, we does call dat Tabanca! And last night a few hundred people who vex with winter and missing the soca riddims of T&T crammed into Islandmix in Pickering for Dr. Jay's remedy. Before there was any reason for the tabanca to kick in. Dr. Jay, a big Toronto posse and yours truly were soaking up the oil and music in Trinidad last month. Check we!

When you feel that way, there's nothing better than a good celebration to get you by. So let me tell you what has other people smiling…And if yuh still working through allyuh Carnival Tabanca, you'll soon realize there's plenty more love to go around.

First off, New York's Ma$tamind Productions, the husband and wife duo that's responsible for bring you all those Mastamind Projects and Christmas albums celebrated 3 years in the business on Monday. Three years, five albums, collaborations with artists from all over; including Rikki Jai, Bomani, Sheldon Douglas, Adrian Dutchin, and Maximus Dan to name a few. We say congrats to dem …and keep making that music! This is me with Shawn "Mastamind" Noel, and Natasha Andrews-Noel in Trinidad last month.

Now down in Trinidad, everybody's favourite loverboy was doing a little celebrating he-self. Kees Dieffenthaller of Kes the Band rang in a birthday on Wednesday. In case you're curious, that little baby face and fit body now boasts 27 years on this earth. God bless us all!

In Miami, they are spreading the love Cuban style today with their annual Calle Ocho street fair. It started off 30 years ago as celebration of La Cultura Cubana, but nowadays it incorporates musical elements from thoughout Latin America and the Caribbean. It spans twenty-three city blocks with sixteen concert stages and the best part is, it's FREE. This year Shaggy, Wyclef and Chaka Khan join the action at Carnaval Miami's big Latin-Caribbean party…that features soca music too!

Now over in Jamaica, the carnival surprises keep on flowing. We usually don't expect a lot of new soca music from JamDown, but up and coming reggae star Da'Ville is adding his voice to the mix. He's making the ladies swoon with a SOCA release called none-other-than TURN ME ON! This soca track was produced by Trinidad's Sheldon "Shel Shok" Benjamin. If you didn't know, he the midi guy in Atlantik... and he produced Roll for Alison Hinds…plus a slew of other very big tracks! Here I am with the boys from Atlantik in St. Vincent last July. Shel Shok is the one standing behind me!

So there's no reason to feel sad and lonely when is out there celebrating life. So forget de Tabanca, cuz it go be Spring before you hear my voice next.

I'm Nurse Karen, and those were Dr. Jay's Rounds. Don't forget to subscribe to my podcast, or leave me a comment online at the Nurse Karen Etc blog at triple W dot Mustard Seeds dot Net. Now back to de docta!

The Rounds: Adrian Dutchin is Guyana's 2008 Soca Monarch

>> Monday, February 18, 2008

Good Evening Soca Lovers, I'm Nurse Karen and these are Dr Jay's Rounds. If you weren't at the Return Fete last night, you really missed out. It was all about Kes the Band and the KOS family kicking of Toronto's soca season in class and style. I have to large up de Soca Warriors crew for elevating their big flag to the ceiling with a little help from their friends. I think the boys were channeling their inner Faye-Ann Lyons when one of the members was carried around Kool Haus - surf board–stylee - on a wooden skid during Kerwin Dubois and Shal Marshall's performance of Gal Farm. Yes, Toronto allyuh crew and dem stepping up.

I'm sure some of you ladies were pleasantly surprised to see exactly what Kees is working with, when he took off his shirt on stage last night. The lead vocalist has been pumping the iron for his role as a surfer on a Trinidadian TV series called De Reef. Well, there won't be much surfing going on while he's in Toronto's c-c-c-old weather. But, Kees says he's kinda digging the snowy vibe in the city…and he would love to try snowboarding, skiing, or ice-skating on for size.

While we were celebrating our collective return from Trinidad Carnival last night, our friends in Guyana were crowning a new soca monarch. Congratulations goes out to X2's Adrian Dutchin for snatching the title back from last year's winner, Malo...and he's hoping that he'll be Mashramani road march king too. This is the third ever win for Dutchin. His winning chune is "No Place Like Home" – a patriotic ditty produced by Shawn Mastamind Noel in New York.
"Un-Nous-Allee!", As we in Toronto get set to celebrate our first ever Family Day holiday, I thought I'd shout out my lovely Lucian listeners. This Friday marks the 29th anniversary of St. Lucia's independence…and dat is a reason to fete. Lucians in NYC will be marking the occasion with a special performance by a 25 year veteran in the music business. Ignatius Tisson, also known as "De Invader" is a seven time roadmarch king, 3-time calypso monarch, an extempo monarch and a king of kings champion. Papa Invader performs wearing a creepy mask that reminds me of those Mexican wrestlers, which goes to show…musical longevity is a by-product of talent, not looks. Happy Independence to the Lucian crew…and happy winter long weekend to ALL OF YOU.
I'm Nurse Karen, and these are Dr. Jay's Rounds. For more soca music news and views, photos, video, and articles… Check out my online blog, (Nurse) Karen (Etc) at triple W dot mustard seeds dot net. Now back to de docta!

Dr. Jay’s Rounds
Karen L. Richardson
May 14, 2006

Good Evening Soca lovers! I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds.

It’s a known fact that famous people are just people like everybody else. Take Dr. Jay for example, he’s likely the best known soca personality in Canada, but that does not stop him from being a well-mannered responsible family man when the lights are on and the party people have all gone home. Sometimes regular working folk like us tend to forget that our favourite music personalities have lives outside of keeping us entertained.

Jamesy P was cutting hair, before he started cutting records. Alison Hinds had to “roll it” to get her hot body back after giving birth to her daughter. Soca artists have to deal with the stresses of life and pay the bills too.

In everyday life, Blazer’s name is Troydon Cruickshank. Last time we mentioned him on Soca Therapy it was to tell you that he was charged for the murder of his brother Dillon. The 24 year old sibling was found dead from a gun shot wound to the head in the family home in Enterprise, Trinidad. There wasn’t much of an investigation since it appeared to take place at point blank range.

Last week the case finally made it to court. And you’d never believe what happened! Both the State attorney and the star witness failed to show up. Blazer was there though. Just long enough to hear the Senior Magistrate THROW THE CASE OUT OF COURT. That’s right today the man is walking free. Blazer may be famous for his 2003 smash hit “Wrong Timing”, but it seems like de boy have some kinda dumb luck too. All ah Trinidad was expecting him to go the way of Martha Stewart and Li’l Kim, but I guess the stars were shining down on him …and maybe dat one isn’t so regular at all.
OK next example, St. Vincent’s Karen Veira is a carnival baby to the core. She been playing mas since she could balance on two feet. Last year, she exploded on to the streets on Kingstown in a new way. She released the groovy soca song “The Way You Make Me Feel” and it solidified her status as a soca songstress. Before you knew it, the then 18 year old was in studio with established artistes like Skinny Fabulous, Dawg-E-Slaughter and Peter Ram. After Vincy Mas she traded in her microphone once again for feathers and glitter as she joined Toronto’s 2005 Band of the Year to jump up with Carnival Nationz on the Lakeshore. Well, she’s back home for carnival and she’s turning heads in a completely new way. Sexy Kayren is strutting her stuff as one of the finalists in the Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadines Pageant. Naturally, her soca status makes her a crowd favourite to win it all on June 3rd. I feel sorry for the other contestants, how can they even try to compete in the talent portion?

Next weekend it’s time for SOCA or DIE 4. Toronto people, get ready to see three of the most talented regular people in music. Destra, Maximus and Kes.

OK, I’ll give you that. These peoples lives are slightly more exciting than the average. But they blood still RED. Trust me on dat one!

I’m Nurse Karen and those are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. Send me your comments at SOCA at FLOW 935 DOT COM. Now back to de super star doctor…
