In this edition:
- International Reggae and World Music Awards Soca Nominees (USA)
- Tizzy goes to France (France / Antigua)
- International Soca Monarch prizes distributed (Trinidad)

- Birthdays: Private 6 (St. Lucia) Harella (Dominica)

Good evening soca lovers. I’m Nurse Karen, and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds.

The International Reggae and World Music Award nominations are out. 2010 makes it 29 years, and this time around several soca artists are among the nominees in six different categories. But the biggest award for the genre would “Best Calypso/Soca Entertainer which pits the likes of Alison Hinds, Machel Montano, Skinny Fabulous, Edwin Yearwood and Fay Ann Lyons against each other. No matter who wins, you can certainly count on great performances from Machel and Alison at the IRAWMA’s in Queens New York for May 2nd. Vote online at triple W dot I R A W M A dot com.

Nurse Karen shares a laugh with Skinny Fabulous (Trinidad, February 2010)
El A Kru’s Tizzy is enjoying the benefits of a blossoming career. Recently, the bouncy Antiguan lead singer returned to her sunny island from headlining the Caribbean Bounce Festival in Bordeaux France. Do you understand what I’m telling you here? A West Indian woman travels all the way to a town known for a certain grapety beverage to teach the people about wine. Kinda ironic don’t you think?

Trinidad’s Caribbean Prestige Foundation distributed the Soca Monarch prizes on Thursday at the Cascadia Hotel. JW and Blaze were there to collect their $600 Thousand TT and a Brand New Toyota Hilux. Shurwayne who earned top prize in Groovy Soca was in person to collect his winnings, but Fay-Ann Lyons did not show up even though she scored a second place in both categories.

During the festivities, Vice President Tony Lee announced that come 2011, the winner will alos receive the “William Munro Soca Monarch Challenge Trophy” along with the cash. The new trophy, named after the event’s co-founder has been created to continue to honour the contribution of William Munro long after he moves on from involvement with the organization. Although, no actual announcement indicating such a move was actually made.

The Friday Night fetes at Bacchanal Jamaica Mas Camp continued this week. It was Shal Marshall’s turn to mash up the session, following Alison Hind’s big show last week. The action continues until just after Easter.

Before  I hand it back to Dr. Jay we gotta wish a happy birthday to St. Lucia’s Private Six on Friday and Dominica’s Harella on Saturday.

Check out this press release from Pyramid Entertainment.  Keep in mind, we're talking about Skinny Fabulous' management. So, I don't want anyone trying to say I'm trying to influence your vote.  Vote with your ears and your heart!

The Rounds: Trini carnival highs and lows...

>> Monday, February 22, 2010

Originally aired on Flow 93.5 FM's Soca Therapy with Dr Jay de Soca Prince, Sunday, 21st February at 6:45 pm.

Good evening soca lovers, I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. We’re baaa-aack! I know Dr. Jay told you that I wouldn’t be in Trinidad for Carnival. But what can I say? Things change. The carnival bug ketch me and I found myself front and centre in the middle of the action.

If you’ve never been to carnival in the Caribbean, it’s definitely something you should try to make happen. If you want to see the artistry, camaraderie, ingenuity and style of our culture come alive, Carnival is one of the best ways to experience it. While in Trinidad, I hit a couple of fetes, checked out the Soca Monarch Finals...and naturally...I just had to hit the beach too. One of the first parties I got to take in was the PNM fete. The People’s National Movement is one of Trinidad’s major political parties...no pun intended! Each year, they sponsor a big soca show that is actually attended by T&T Prime Minister, Patrick Manning. Hear me...That would be kinda like, Steven Harper inviting the public wine and get on to the top bands at 24 Sussex Drive. Only in the West Indies, I tell yuh.

That night, it became pretty clear that two song written and produced by Machel’s musical director, Kernal Roberts were about to rule the Carnival. I’m talking about Palance by JW and Blaze, and Police in de Session by Shal Marshall and Screws.

Shal Marshall performing at Soca Monarch

The next night I went to Eyes Wide Shut. If you haven’t heard already...Jamaican dancehall phenomenon Serani was booked as a guest act. I’m sure the promoters thought it was a great idea, but when all of the soca acts had left the stage for the night, the crowd was far from impressed that a dancehall act would be scheduled to close out a major carnival week fete, especially one who had publicly criticized the soca genre in the media early last year. The result? A resounding...BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Poor Serani only asked the ladies to Make Some Noise.... but both men and ladies joined forces to shame the man off stage. Score one for soca. Score zero for international relations. Heh!

As for Soca Monarch! What a night. Personally, that’s my favourite event on the T&T Carnival Calendar...and just so happens to be the most important night of the year for soca. I was so close to the stage. I could literally feel the fireworks burning my nose hairs. Sad to say, Fay Ann Lyons lost her titles in both categories and had to settle for second place behind Shurwayne Winchester in Groovy and ahead of Rikki Jai and Patrice Roberts.

In the Power Category poor Fay-Fay took a silver medal there too. In fourth was Tallpree with Wicked Jab. Shal and Screw placed 3rd....and in first were none of other than JW and Blaze with Palance.

Utter Madness you should have seen the crowd get on for those fellas. Honorable mention goes to Toronto’s own Kerwin Du Bois whose Groovy performance of “Pavement” with Farmer Nappy was the first to send the crowd into a frenzy. It was like a rock concert in there.
Farmer Nappy getting as close as possible to the crowd

So much to tell, but precious time in short....the winning streak continued to till carnival Tuesday for Palance. That’s the new T&T Roadmarch, beating out “True Lies” and “No Behaviour” with more than 400 plays at judging points. So we are talking about a roadmarch win by the widest margin in Trinidad Carnival History.

Before I go, I have to tell you one more thing. I’m sure you rememeber me telling you that Machel would not be performing anywhere during the carnival season. And of course Destra just had a baby...so she was missing in action too. Well, great news...the hiatus is over. On Thursday, Machel Montano gave a live performance in Port of Spain alongside visiting R&B star, Beyonce Knowles. During his set, he surprised the crowd by performing 2003 hit, “It’s Carnival” with Destra Garcia in her first post pregnancy appearance. And when Beyonce hit the stage, imagine the shock when she burst into her own rendition of the 2010 Roadmarch, “Palance”. By all accounts the concert was money well spent...and it makes me feel happy to see that Miss B, paid a lil respect to the local scene.

The Rounds: What Soca artists wish for 2010

>> Monday, January 4, 2010

Good evening soca lovers, I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jays rounds. Happy 2010! It’s a new year here at Soca Therapy and I look forward to bringing you the latest insider information from the soca world every Sunday...just like you’ve come to expect.
This year already proves to be a busy one for many soca artists with Carnivals wrapping up in the Bahamas, St. Kitts, Monserrat and St. Croix...and carnival bubbling to a boil in Trinidad, Dominica and Guyana.
BVI soca artist and producer Kamau brought his brand of music to St. Croix for New Years, performing jazz saxophone at one event and jamming with a traditional band at another.

Montserrat Festival went on, despite the recent threats posed by the Soufriere volcano. Some describe carnival as Bottom in De Road. When I caught up with Scrappy a few days ago, he described it as ``ASH`` in the air. (That`s A-S-H, by the way....this is a family show)
Slammer Cutter should be taking a rest today after a video shoot last night on the Danforth.

Umi Marcano rang in the new year at a gig in New York, but he's wasting no time. Now that he`s back in Trinidad, Today is all about shooting his second music video for the season, "Folk Reality".
Trinidadian reggae artist Junior Don is making a foray into the soca arena for 2010. He’ll be gigging with Peter C and the Orchestra as a frontline vocalist.

Peter C in Miami 2009

Before I forget, lemme say Happy Birthday to Peter C Lewis formerly of the Xtatik band. He turns 38 today in Trinidad. But he`s not the only one celebrating both a personal new year and the public one...Bajan soca twins Barry and Bruce Chandler rang in their 26th birthday on December 30th, while Lucian former monarch Mantius also celebrated his arrival on the planet that very same day.
I hurried through the other items, in order to share something I read today that inspired me. The Trinidad Express Newspaper asked some local entertainers what they wish for 2010. Here's what a few of them had to say:

Fay-Ann Lyons (soca artiste): ’My wish is for peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind. I also pray that my daughter grows up to be a loving and joyful little lady. For the nation, I pray that there will finally be a reduction in crime and for my family, I wish that we will all be happy and learn to truly love each other.’

Blaxx (soca artiste): ’Most importantly I wish that my fellow artistes will seek to have better lyrics in their songs and be more responsible. Some of them are not setting good examples for the younger ones wanting to come into the arena because of the sexual and violent lyrics. I also really want to see something serious done about the crime situation. All my other wishes have come true already. I got married and I have good music for the season.’

Blaxx and Nurse Karen in Toronto (August 2008)
Kees Dieffenthaller (artiste/musician): ’I always want the same thing every year and that is to really push the music of Trinidad and Tobago and achieve something on a global scale. This year we are working to get closer to that realisation. Also, for a developing Trinidad, things will be even tighter financially next year with the recession and I really hope we don’t lose our sense of community and spirit of giving because of these tough times. I pray that we would not forget our neighbours as we seek to get ours in those tough times and we will look out for each other. As for crime, as we work to that 20/20 vision, with growth come bigger problems such as crime. We are losing that village lifestyle where everyone raised the children. Listen to what the children and youth are saying.’

Iwer George (soca artiste/owner Soca 91.9FM): I pray for a miracle as far as crime is concerned, that the murder rate will read minus zero at the end of 2010. I would also like to see more young soca artistes get an opportunity to make it. For me, I am hoping that God will deliver what I have asked Him for, it’s a personal thing, in the coming year.

The Rounds: Soca Awards Cancellation, Results, Etc

>> Monday, November 16, 2009

Originally prepared for "Soca Therapy" on Flow 93.5 FM in Toronto, Sunday, November 15, 2009

- 2009 Soca Awards Cancelled (USA)
- Commentary on the results
- CEO of Caribbean Prestige Foundation quits! (Trinidad)
- Tempo Turns 4 (USVI)

Good Evening Soca Lovers,
I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. You have no idea how tired I am saying this, but I have some news about the Soca Awards. Last time I brought it up, it was to say that the event originally scheduled for October 30th, was being rescheduled for December 4th. And today, the story has changed yet again! The 2009 International Soca Awards has been cancelled due to what the organizers are citing as unforeseen circumstances.

The awards show has long been the target of heavy criticism in the industry due to often questionable judgments concerning nominations and the production quality of the events, as well as a general lack of transparency. So, the recent cancellation isn’t looking so hot. The results, HOWever, were published today. Winners are decided based on the results of online voting, which this year, SEEMS to have turned up a rather curious number of ties.

Nurse Karen and Fay-Ann Lyons (Toronto: May, 2008)

None the less, big congratulations goes out Machel Montano for his wins in six categories, and Fay-Ann Lyons and Skinny Fabulous who earned 5 awards each. A record number of Toronto’s own hometown stars, ought to be thankful to you the fans for your votes and support. Toronto-Lime.com, Shy-Ann Bailey, Slammer Cutter and Kerwin Du Bois are all winners today.

Kerwin Du Bois and Nurse Karen in Washingon, D.C. (January 2009)

...And just because I like to make trouble, I want to big up Madmen Productions for their Best Soca Compilation Rhythm award. LOL.  It must feel amazing to find out that you are winning awards for the Bus Stop Riddim, even though Bunji Garlin and Daryl Braxton produced it.WTF?!?  Maybe it was just a typo, but nice one guys! Maybe if I’m really lucky, I could win Best Actress at the Academy Awards next year.

It has been a wild week for soca. No one can deny that. Down in Trinidad the Caribbean Prestige foundation CEO quit this week. That’s the group that produces the International Soca Monarch Competition. It’s believed that a problematic press release is responsible for that one too. Gregory Fernandes, the CEO, held a press conference on Tuesday criticizing a Trini government policy that prohibits the hosting of cultural events, like Soca Monarch, in major sports arenas during the carnival season. The next day, the CPF told the media that his conference not only had nothing to do with them, but they also praised recent government initiatives in regards to cultural activities. Needless to say, Fernandes didn’t appreciate being made to look like a fool. So he’s gone, and it’s still unknown what venue will play host to Soca’s biggest competitive event in February 2010.

Nurse Karen and Iwer George in Toronto (February, 2009)

Speaking of big ticket events. MTV Tempo celebrated it’s 4th anniversary last night on the island of St. Croix. Representing the soca massive was De Boss, Iwer George, Ziggy Ranking, and local Road March Winners, the UMB Solidiers. Other than that it was full line up of Caribbean Stars in Salsa, Dancehall and Reggae.

Eye Unit: Happy Birthday Fay-Ann Lyons! (video attached)

>> Thursday, November 5, 2009

Nurse Karen and Fay Ann Lyons (Miami - October 2009)

As we continue November's bounty of Soca artists, we wish a very happy birthday to Fay-Ann Lyons. As she turns 29, she's got to be pretty thankful for the exiting year that just passed. The Trinidadian daughter of Soca and Calypso royalty proved herself worthy of the title "princess" in the game, by becoming the 1st female in that country's history to win the Soca Monarch title. She took both International (Power) soca and Groovy only days before becoming a mom for the first time.

Happy Birtday Fay-Ann keep climbing higher!

For your viewing pleasure, I attached a video of my interview with Fay Ann for Roamin' TV in Barbados.  I caught her for an in depth talk about motherhood after her Crop Over performance at Caribbean Wet Fete. Enjoy!

Love and Soca,

The Rounds: Celebrating carnival, Scorpio B-days, Creole Day and Independence!

>> Monday, October 26, 2009

Originally aired on "Soca Therapy", Sunday, October 25th, 2009 @ 6:45 pm
Flow 93.5 FM in Toronto

In this edition:
- Celebrating Soca Scorpios - Toronto / International
- LA Carnival / Jacksonville Carnival - USA
- Machel at Antillia Carnival - USA
- Sunshine Awards held on Saturday - USA
- Notting Hill Carnival Doc Screened - UK
- Soca Mix in Fader - USA
- Creole Day - Dominica, St. Lucia, Haiti
- St. Vincent Independence - St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Good Evening Soca Lovers,
I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. Sometimes I feel like we’re speeding through the 2009 calendar. Coulda sworn it was Summer just the other day...and now...it’s Scorpio season. Soca or Die 10 goes down on Saturday celebrating the birthdays of Dr. Jay, Marxman and a few other soca scorpios including yours truly. But we’re not the only ones. This past week Trinidad’s Jadee, and St. Vincent’s Problem Child had birthdays too, and Lil Bitts has a birthday on Saturday.

If we’re not celebrating one thing, it’s another. West Indians in southern California enjoyed fetes and revelry last weekend for Los Angeles Carnival. This week, the fun moved back to Florida for Jacksonville Carnival yesterday.

Next on the docket is New York City’s Antillia Carnival which will launch in Manhattan on November 5th with a performance by Machel Montano HD. This year’s uber posh preview of Trinidad Carnival will be hosted by former miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam, and male supermodel Tyson Beckford.

Last night, New York City also playee host to the 21st annual Sunshine Awards, which recognizes Caribbean achievement in the performing arts. Nominees were chosen from many islands and many creative fields. Where soca is concerned, Shurwayne, Bunji and Fay-Ann all were nominated for best new song, while Alston Beckett Cyrus was honoured for his lifetime contribution to the artform.

As Black History Month in the UK comes to a close this week, a new documentary that showing off the beauty and artistry of Nottinghill Carnival will be screened this week. It’s called "Sequins, Soca and Sweat," and it follows six mas bands through their hectic carnival preparations.

Here in Canada, a well known Montreal club DJ was featured on a major music magazine’s website. Ghislain Poirier’s 25 minute soca mix was selected as this week’s Ghetto Palms feature on Fader dot com. Even through Poirier isn’t known exclusively for soca he has been touring extensively in 2009 promoting raising awareness of the genre and his Soca Sound System EP. We like that kinda thing!

I’m Nurse Karen and those were Dr. Jay’s Rounds. Before I go, I’d like to wish a happy Creole Day to all my Lucian, Haitian and Dominicans on the outside. And to my Vincy Massive Happy 30th anniversary of Independence.

Eye Unit: Asylum Band at Brooklyn Brass Fest 2009

>> Saturday, October 10, 2009

As you can tell, before I left for Miami, I anticipated long days and late nights. So I organized a few posts....just in case I didn't have the energy to give you daily updates. So here's a little footage from New York Carnival last month. Check out Fay-Ann partying on stage with about50% of the crowd. She's been pulling these kinda stunts all year! This party was tons of fun...although I dunno why Patrice wasn't a part of the HD set that night.

Large up DJ Spice and Dr. Jay for hosting a sweet lime by the DJ booth!

Love and Soca,

Nurse Karen

P.S. I've got some more "nurse's lounge" updates coming just now from Miami! Tings nice!!!!

Booster Shot: The Asylum Family sticks it to Miami promoters

>> Tuesday, September 29, 2009

More than other penny pinching promoters throughout the socaverse, Miami party promoters are known to cut corners when hosting events. I talk to artists all the time, and it may suprise you to learn that for Miami Carnival MOST soca perfomers have to pay for their own flights, hotel stays and meals. Several promoters are known to pay up late, or not at all. Some of the biggest events only pay about 20% of their billed artistes, while the other cast members perform just for the hope of greater exposure.Of course, you have those who also advertise artists and DJs who aren't even confirmed, then have the nerve to ask patrons to pay handsomely for tickets that would probably cost less in any other city. I'm no artiste, but that kinda treatment would be enough to discourage me from my craft. If you can't even expect to profit from performances in front of huge crowds that earn US dollars, when can you expect to make a buck?

I dunno if any of you have heard about this new fete happening in Miami during Columbus Day weekend this year. But, there's a little something called Miami Vice, happening on Friday, October 9th on the actual set of Miami Vice, the Ice Palace.

I felt like personally throwing my love behind this event for what it represents. So before anyone is too quick to talk. This is not a paid advertisement. I wrote this because, I support the music, the music-makers, and anyone who believes in excellence.

Miami Vice was the brainchild of Fay-Ann Lyons. After several bad experiences fighting for the respect of persons who feign to
PROMOTE the soca artform, she and husband Bunji Garlin thought it would be a good
idea to put their money behind a Miami-based event that would showcase soca in a professional manner.

So beyond the fact that the thing goes down at a mansion/film studio made famous by a TV series that literally put the city of
Miami on the map, there are other noteworthy factors that make this fete worth supporting with your dolla-dolla bills y'all:

1. ARTIST DRIVEN: I told you all that. The Asylum camp ARE the promoters.
2. CONFIRMED CAST: Bunji and Fay called up a few of their best buddies in the business. They WILL be there; Beenie Man, Benjai, Biggie Irie, Denise Belfon, Hunter, Kevin Lyttle, Peter Ram, Problem Child, Sizwe C,
Skinny Fabulous, Trini Jacobs...
3. NO TRACKS! The entire cast will be backed by the Asylum Band. Dem boyz are working overtime in rehearsals learning the music for that long @$$ list of guests. Most of these artists do not travel with bands, so this is a rare chance to catch the kind of energy live music alone can inspire.
4. PRICE: It's 35 Bucks...what is that $2.50 per artist? It's cheaper than most of the other local offerings on the same night.
Knowing what most of these acts charge, I really have no idea how they're even making money on this event.

I love soca, but I freely admit that there are a lot of things that
happen behind the scenes making this business very dirty and cruel at times. So congratulations to all of the people working hard behind the scenes to make Miami Vice a success. From what I understand, regular people have been volunteering
their time and creativity to make sure the word gets out. I sincerely hope that in doing this, all of you begin to send a strong message to some of the players in the game who have been breaking the rules for far too long.

I will be there, and if anyone wants to join me, you can buy advance tickets HERE

The Rounds: Ma$tamind Productions to drop two albums for Christmas

>> Monday, September 14, 2009

In this Edition:

- Cambridge Carnival
- The parang season starts now!
- Two Christmas albums for Ma$tamind Productions
- Belize Road March postponed
- Bunji and Fay Ann promote their own Miami Carnival Fete

Originally broadcast on Flow 93.5 FM's Soca Therapy on Sunday, September 13, 2009
_________________________________________

Good Evening Soca Lovers,

I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. After a couple of weeks in the U. S. of A., I'm BACK!!! I made my first visit to a very cold and rainy Boston Carnival, I hung out in New York, doing some major networking with some soca heads over there. Then I took in some Labor Day action in Brooklyn.

This weekend, Massachusetts is jumping up again at Cambridge Carnival. If you’ve never heard of it, that’s because it’s usually overshadowed by the festivities held across the river in Boston. Cambridge is the community where you find prestigious universities like Harvard and M.I.T. 2009 marks the first year that Cambridge has held its celebration on a different weekend than its Beantown neighbour. At a balmy 26 degrees Celsius, carnival goers in Massachusetts must be happy they gotta a second chance at carnival this year.

Here in Toronto, we may be just getting ready to say goodbye to summer, but Trinidad and Tobago is moving full speed ahead into the Christmas Season. Yesterday, the world’s largest Parang music festival began in at the Arima Velodrome. Between now and January there are 13 scheduled shows featuring 36 bands. That means four straight months of Christmas!

Speaking of Christmas, I’m getting in the spirit too. While in New York, I found out that Mastamind Productions will be releasing two Holiday albums in 2009. One of them will be their much anticipated Parang and Soca Parang album, A Mastamind Christmas. But the second will be a compilation of Caribbean Artistes performing holiday classics in styles ranging from rock to jazz. Oh, and by the way....yours truly, Nurse Karen, recorded a spoken word piece called “Question’s for Mary” that will also be on the album.

But no worries Soca massive, we still have lots of time before we gotta think about shopping or snow or anything like that. Well..I sure hope so, anyway. Before Christmas...is Carnival.

Belize was supposed to be jumping up this weekend, however the organizers made a last minute to shift the street party to next weekend, in favour of a hosting a large scale cultural fair instead. Belize road march will take place next Saturday instead.

Now, if somehow you didn’t catch this news the first time around. Please allow me to remind you that South Florida will be having just ONE Carnival on our Thanksgiving weekend. For the last few years, two separated parades of the bands were hosted on the very same day, one in the city of Miami, and one about 40 minutes north in Broward County.

But 2009 is all about unity. ...
Bunji and FayAnn are taking advantage of the special occasion to host their own signature event that weekend called Miami Vice. They’ve invited a handful of their friends in the business to put on a star studded show featuring the likes of Beenie Man, Denise Belfon, Benjai, Problem Child, Sizwe C, Hunter, Trini Jacobs, and Skinny Fabulous.

What you think? Shall we book a little vacation? I’m Nurse Karen and those were Dr. Jay’s rounds. For more info on everything you’ve heard here, surf on to my blog at Nurse dash Karen dot com. Now, back to de Docta!

We all know that hands down, 2009 is the most successful year thusfar n the career of Fay Ann Lyons. The accolades have been listed over and over again, but Fay's greatest success is her daughter. Nurse's Lounge: What happened to me at Fire Fete

>> Monday, August 3, 2009

(Pleasre remember to comment after reading this. Any information on the happenings last night, or even words of encouragment are TRULY appreciated)

I just want to say thank you to all of you who have been showing concern for me following an incident that took place at CVR Entertaiment's Fire Fete earlier this morning. I am indeed yet in a lot of discomfort. As some of you know, and witnessed. I was sprayed in the face and eyes by an employee of a private security firm, hired to secure the stage area at one of the popular Toronto Carnival stage shows on Sunday night.

The pain continues, however, it is infinitely milder than in the moments following the initial incident, wherein, I lost my vision and felt was thought the skin on my neck, face, mouth and ears was being bitten up by and infestation of ants. In case, this is all new to you. Yes, I'm going to fill you in. I realise it's smart to put things in writing, especially since this is turning out to be a much more serious issue than I had thought at first.

I am posting this report on my blog for several reasons.

1. To address those expressing genuine concern to whom I'm not able to respond directly
2. To squash rumours
3. To extablish a written first hand account of my experience
4. To identify the perpetrator
5. To make known eye-witness to the unfortunate incident, whether in whole or in part
5. To compliment a police report that (I hope) was filed by a caucausian female officer from 51 division who refused to give me her name after I made my report in front of the venue shortly after 4 am.
6. To further connect with soca fans, and supports who know and appreciate my efforts to professionally expose the ins and outs of the soca business internationally through radio, online blogs, feature print articles, and on-camera work.

For your reference, I have provided a link to Wikipedia's article on "Pepper Spray"...the substance which I believe was used against me willfully and illegally, as an uneccesary restraint, as I posed no threat whatsoever to patrons, artistes or staff. Rather, I was attending the event with the full support of the promotional outfit...simple doing my job.

Please click for an explanation of the effects of the substance, including symptoms I experiences and in some cases continue to experience right now, about 6 hours after I was sprayed.

Below is an excerpt from the Wikipedia article that refers to the legal use of Pepper Spray and other such products here in Canada. If the copied information indeed presents factual information about the substance. It stands to reason, that I have a rightful legal claim against the contracted security agency and the employee who resorted to this barbaric assault without warning of any sort.

In Canada
In Canada all products with a label containing the words pepper spray, mace, etc, or otherwise originally produced for use on humans are classified as a prohibited weapon[27]. Only Peace Officers, and individuals/corporations who have special government permits may legally carry or possess pepper spray. Any similar canister with the labels reading "dog spray" and/or "bear spray" is regulated under the Pest Control Products Act - while legal to be carried by anyone, it is against the law if its use causes 'a risk of imminent death or serious bodily harm to another person' or harming the environment and carries a penalty up to a fine of $500,000 and jail time of maximum 3 years[28]. Of course, the legality of using spray intended for animal deterent on a person would be determined in court on a case-by-case basis

For details on my account of the situation, continue reading below:

First things first. At the beginning of Fay Ann Lyons' performance at Fire Fete, I was approached by a security guard, likely in his 40's who asked me to move from the media/photographer's pit in front of the stage. I responded by showing the "gentlemen" (medium build, 5'10 to 6'1) my yellow all access wristband. He told me that the promoter, who he named, had asked him to clear everyone from the stage area. At the same time, Tee, a local event photographer who also does some work for Toronto-Lime dot com was standing quite close to me on a speaker box. She saw that there seemed to be a problem and told me to inform the guy that I was media. I had already done so, but I told him again after she had vouched for me.

The nameless "security" officer

My media clearance was confirmed via email sent from the promoter's iphone 5 days ago on July 28th. I have covered events at the same venue in the past and have never had any problems. So, I had no reason to think that I was to clear the area. Earlier the the show, a few mega-fans found their way into this secured area and were making it difficult for the photographer to get clear shots. Two young men in particular were waving flags and dancing around in there. I am quite sure that if the promoter/stage manager desired for action to be taken it would have been directed to those fellows. To my knowledge, they had all left the area shortly before the incident took place with yours truly.

Most people in the soca business can vouch, that I almost always walk with my business cards. I use these to make it easy for industry personalities to stay in touch with their news and happenings. When the aggressive security personnel began to give me problems, I presented him one of my cards. It bears a photograph of my face, and clearly reads; "Nurse Karen" ( Line 1) "Entertainment Journalist" (Line 2) followed by contact information. The reverse side of the card reads (Soca News from the Source) surrounded by a variety of links to online entities that either demonstrate my involvment in the field or provide additional methods of contact, i.e., blog address, msn address, podcast link, myspace link.

The card was swatted out of my hand. The guard began shouting "Move" repeatedly. At this point, I had backed up to the outside right hand corner of the front of the stage, having almost completely exited the area in dispute. The security officer picked up a long black item with his right hand. Initially, I thought it to be a walkie-talkie. I asked him if he was calling the promoter. (I used his name) Little did I know, at the time...that the officer has raised a cannister of what I believe to be mace or pepper spray. As I began to see the vapour heading directly for my line of sight, I closed my eyes tightly and turned to walk away. I remember seeing the officer depress the aerosol twice in succession. Fay Ann made comments on stage to the effect of security being rough (I don't recall her specific words, however there are likely several videos circulating with this footage. Also, several artists and show patrons after listening to my story believed it to be somehow connected to Fay Ann's comments on the stage.

A better look at the guy who ended my Caribana on a sour note

At first, the shock was greater than the pain. The first effect was respiratory, then a burning buzz began to develop on my lips. I ran to tell Gary Duarte, a section leader with Tribal Knights band. I dunno if he caught what I was saying, but when he didn't respond I began to make my way backstage. As I walked though a jumble of persons standing at the back right hand corner of the stage. I saw KMC, who may just arrived. We greeted eachother briefly as I told him what happened. The sting was rapidly intensifying. When I got backstage, I got quite angry. I shouted out aloud that I had been Pepper sprayed. Ravi B, Nisha B and Karma Band who were there.

Someone in the band suggested that I wash my face, to removed the chemicals. I did so in a green room sink. The water actually deepened the pain and spread the burning feeling further around my face and neck. My eyes burned with an indescribably pain. I clenched my eyes together tightly as hot tears seeped out incessantly. I began bouts of screaming. I didn't know how to make it stop. The pain continued to get worse rapidly for 20 or so minutes. I was unable to open my eyes for the pain, and when opened I could not see anything.

I really have to extend a deep word of thanks and deep respect and appreciation to Ravi and Nisha (who I met in person for the first time at Fire Fete). They treated me like gold.

I'm not sure who was saying or doing what at this point. However, I believe it was Nisha who asked if she could get anything for me. As my friends, ( who are all general patrons) where somewhere out in the crowd. I asked the female who was with me in the washroom to get Skinny Fabulous. We've known each other long before there was a "Nurse Karen" to speak of. I just wanted someone who actually knows me to be aware of what was going on. I still couldn't see. Even when Skinny arrived and was speaking to me, I was so out of it, I didn't realize who I was speaking to.

Paramedics were called to the backstage area. The first person who listened to me told me that security is not allowed to carry pepper spray. They cautioned me against putting water on my skin. They checked my eyes repeatedly, and commented on their redness. One of the women was visibly disgusted by the look of my eyes. I took Skinny Fabulous' towel and put it over my face, so as to cover my clenched tearful face.

Different people ensured me that they alerted event organizers. Several people asked me for a description of the culprit. I gave the description numorous times. However, I was told over and over that he could not be found and that no one knew who he was. Tee, the photographer I mentioned earlier eventually made it back stage and saw me, after most of the burning had moved out from my eyes.

I can go on with further details as the night was very long. Just a couple more things to mention at this point.

I gave this account to the paramedic, as well as Alex Miller who works providing security with the venue. He took me aside to tell me that the person responsible was additional security hired by the promoter to deal with the stage area. He took all my contact information..and assured me that he would be finding out the name of the outside security company that was used. He says, that following an incident such as the one I've described, the two teams can not continue to work together. The use of excessive force on a non-combative member of the media, would not be condoned.

My contact details, date of birth, and street address was provided for the paramedic whose name I can't remember (blonde, female) and for Mr. Miller. They were both understanding and friendly. Eventually a couple of my friends were permitted to meet me backstage, to meet me and carry me home. Much of the stinging and redness had dissipated from my eyes, however as it spread, my skin appeared to become reddened and irritated. Even as I continue to write at 9:33 am, it seems as though my eyes have begun to sting again from remnants of the substance that may be in my eyelashes.

That's all for now. I likely won't share any more of this on Nurse Karen Etc. However, when the matter was brought to the attention of the Toronto Police, it was initially handled with a total disregard for my security or the severity of the matter. I will be attempting to launch a complaint about the officer who turned his back on me and walked away after I had asked him about the process of filing a report.

I still feel the stinging. After reading some of the information about pepper spray online, I will attempt bathing in baby shampoo to remove this from my skin. I will be visiting my local division to ensure that an official report has been filed. I will also be looking for an open medical clinic ( even though it's a holiday Monday). My lips are very swollen this morning, and the skin on the left side of my neck, chest and shoulders feels raw and bumpy.

Thanks to everyone who assisted me. You are greatly appreciated. This situation could have been so much worse without you. I feel blessed to know that there are people who are so kind and caring in critical times. If I miss names, I apologize. In some cases it's because I have forgotten your name. However, I would like to take the time to acknowledge those who come to mind. I pray that God adds you blessings, as you continue to give from the heart, loving one another as God first loved you.
Love and respect to: Tee, Ravi B, Nisha B, Skinny Fabulous, Andrea, Colleen, Kevin Browne, Dr. Jay

As this was happening it brought to mind several trying experiences that have dotted my career in entertainment journalism. The fight for respect is a constant uphill battle. Of the years, I have contually been surprised by both the strangers who have sacrificed much to assist me, and the supposed close allies who at times present the greatest barriers to my success.

About 7 hours ago, I posted the following on twitter and facebook:
Pepper spray in my eyes. of all the disrespect i've ever endured in this biz, this is the worst. dunno if being nurse karen is worth this.

Several of you responded with an outpouring of love. You have no idea what those words mean to me. I love the work that I am blrssed to be able to do. I see such talent and potential in our music and our Caribbean people, I want to be a part of helping us as people reach our highest height. So thanks from the bottom of my heart for believing in me, and always encouraging me to look past the troubles to the bigger picture!

Love and Soca,

Nurse Karen

P.S. If you wanna help, here's what you can do.

1. If you witnessed this. Please go to the police. I know that's not popular in our community. However, I believe that punitiva action must be taken. The security guard used a banned substance that is known to cause permanent damage to some victims and has been linked to the death of some victims

2. Identify the security guard for me. I want to be sure that his employers are aware of what took place. At this point, I have to trust that someone else is taking care of it. No one was forthcoming with a name for this man. (I snapped the above photos of him as I was leaving the venue. So, he did not leave when people where saying so. I have reason to believe that some persons were protecting his identity.

3. Tell me something good. This had me really shaken. Writing about it is helping a lot, but more than that...knowing you're there, sending positive vibes...that goes a long way.

Love you all! ...and thanks!

Eye Unit: Fay Ann and Bunji at Fire Fete, St. Vincent

>> Friday, July 17, 2009

Fay Ann was in fine form two weeks ago at Fire Fete in St. Vincent. Tonight the action moves to St. Lucia for Outrageous: Sexy In Black. Your girl Rochelle will be there to check out the vibes.

I recently saw the Asylum crew do their thing at Caribbean Wet Fet in Barbados and Fire Fete in Vincy (portrayed below). The two shows were different in structure and vibe. More on that laste. But I must say, Fay Ann connected with the crowd in SVG a way that most artistes would shy away from. The Vincy crowd was jumping, waying, running, and storming the VIP section, and rolling on the ground all under her command.

Here are a few clips to show you the kind of mood that took over Victoria Park on July 2nd.

Intro:"Superblue" and "Clear De Road" Freestyle

"Heavy T" and "Banana"

Benjai adds his flare:

there's more...sit tight for my Nurse's Lounge on Fire Fete.

But in the meantime...enjoy!

Love and Soca,

Nurse Karen

Nurse's Lounge: Fire Fete in St. Vincent!!!! part one

>> Friday, July 3, 2009

High off the music!!! That's how I'm feeling today. It's a wonder that I'm already chilling in the lobby with my laptop at 11 am. That party was maddddddddd!

This year, the Carnival Development Committee is trying something new. They've combined some of the official, more cultural carnival events with privately promoted fetes, so as to draw out bigger crowds. No surprise that Bunji Garlin and the Asylum
Band were coupled with National Panorama. So, Fire Fete is wey we a talk bout.

When I arrived in Victoria Park, the crowds were vibing off a performance from the Madd Symphony. Maddzart, D'Lanlord and Tamisha had the growing audience rocking and wining to some of their sweet ragga soca tunes for Vincy Mas 2009. I could already tell the party would be nice.

I found my way backstage, and checked out the stage set up. The bands came through in the early afternoon to soundcheck. The process went wayyyyyyyyy overtime, but eventually they got it right. But God loves a good practical joke now and then, eh. In the early evening high winds breezed right over the stage, and knocked over a set of equipment...which meant trouble and vexation for the stage crew and bands.

Still, the party came off without a hitch. By the time Hottsand got up to play, the audience was really in a party mood...myself included. Ran into Fitz, the marketing director for LIME in the VIP. He hooked me up with a light-up LIME champagne glass...which happens to be just as affective at holding Malibu and Pine! Sharlene Samuels, Syxx, and Johnny Rebel gave us a sweet combination of soca covers and their original tunes. Miss Sharlene has really grown as a performer. Her command of the crowd was exceptional for a vocalist whose name is still a mystery to most fete-goers. It is possible that after she drops "We Jamming" at Soca Monarch this Saturday all that could change.

Fire Empress had the ladies shadowing her hottness for "Fire Brigade". Then the HOTTSAND set sparked a full out blaze when Icon reminded St. Vincent they love him so much. Chune, chune and chune again from "Ready" on the 2005 Lava Slide Riddim , to "Get On"...his 2009 Soca Monarch contender. The energy was palpable!

Soca Dans inna de building. Jamesy P, Fireman and Luta. Let me be the first to say it. I LOVE Luta's Rumbo...and SHAKE! So did the crowd...all kinda new dance styles were brukkin out.

Nurse Karen and Skinny Fabulous at Fire Fete

I popped backstage just before Skinny Fabulous and Problem Child did their thing. As expected "Maddhouse" mashed up the thousands in attendance, but hear what...Skinny still has a chance. De Beast Letgo shook up Victoria Park, more than I've seen in previous shows. Soca Monarch is still anyone's game...Can't wait for Saturday.

So, did I mention that Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons and the Asylum Band were the featured acts? St. Vincent's wild soca posse come out in their numbers for Bunji..and in 2009 it's clear that their love for Fay-Ann is now in full bloom.

Nurse Karen and Fay Ann at Fire Fete
Was nice to see Benjai join them on stage. It was a redemptive performance of sorts. He was at Glow the night before, performing after a list of artists long like my arm. Most of the crowd left while he was singing, through no fault of his own. Even though Benjai has a Vincy Grandpa, and he was up in de fete with his Uncle and Cousin, St. Vincent isn't super familiar with his 2009 selections. Well, that was THEN!

Benjai, Bunji and Fay-Ann performing at Fire Fete

I'll come back with more on this show. Doh worreee, It will be a glooooooooooooooowing review. Good work Bing!

So, gimme a chance to put up some vidz and pics. But rest assured de ting was pure FFFFFFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIREEEEEEEEE!!!

Eye Unit: Bunji and Fay Ann give first performance after childbirth, with Benjai (video)

>> Friday, May 22, 2009

Yo!! Wassup everybody.  You have no idea how busy this week was for the entire Nurse Karen Etc team.  No worries!  We still fixed you up with some great sights, sounds and info from the soca world! Here's one really worth checking out.

You all know the story.  Fay Ann Lyons entered the height of Trinidad's 2K9 carnival season 8 months pregnant.  She ripped up every fete with her big belly, then went on to win all the competitive soca categoried in carnival.  She man, sweet sweet Bunji, did his thing too.  He tied for second with Iwer George at International Soca Monarch for spite.  LOL. They had a great year.  Then, just couple days after the season done, baby Syri came along, one month early on February 28, 2009.

Well...there's the recap. ....and here's now:  Trinidad's hottest celebrity couple has risen out of their 2.5 month performance hiatus!  They hit the ground running for what promises to be a very busy year following an historic carnival season.

That first show happened on Saturday.  It was right here in my hometown, Toronto.  Respect to Dr. Jay for bringing up Fay Ann, Bunji, baby Syri, Benjai and he Asylum Band to bring the energy of Carnival 2k9 to the KoolHaus.

Sorry to say, a lot of people missed out on what to me was an outstanding show.  But now, you don't have to. Here are a few poorly lit clips I captured just for you from the side of the stage.

Enjoy!
I'm sure you noticed Benjai getting his drink on during the show.  Pure comedy!  Oh Lawd, Drunk Again!  Special shout to Soca Dread from IslandMix.com for snapping this shot of Benjai and moi just 2mins before showtime!

If you missed earlier posts about this pretty-dayum-amazing show, check them below:

The Rounds: Bajan songwriter to open for Beyonce

>> Sunday, May 17, 2009

In this edition:
  • Bunji and Fay-Ann give frist concert following the birth of baby Syri
  • Happy Birthday Super Jigga TC
  • Happy Birthday Skinny Fabulous
  • Carnivals; Atlanta, Orlando, San Francisco
  • Shontelle Layne to open for Beyonce's UK tour
  • Synnnah signs a recording deal

Good Evening Soca Lovers, I’m Nurse Karen and these are Dr. Jay’s Rounds. Where were you when Benjai, Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons gave their first full length soca concert following a historic 2009 Trinidad Carnival season? Me? I-WAS-THERE at I LOVE SOCA...Watching every glorious moment of the much anticipated event. ...As Benjai did his funky dance moves. ....As Bunji literally bounced with jitters to get back on stage as the band
struck the opening chords. I was there when Fay-Ann made us “Focus” on her fit body, that just 10 weeks ago was fat-and-round-and-pregnant! That show was full of highlights. Big up Dr. Jay for consistently coming through for Toronto with top rate entertainment!

Birthday Boy TC and Moi! (Toronto, 2009)

Yesterday, Trinidad’s Super Jigga TC was marking an historic occasion yesterday too! It was his 32nd birthday! So b-day shouts go south to the DJ, radio and TV personality, host of Synergy Soca star, songwriter and soca artiste! Hope it was wonderful. Speaking of birthdays, St. Vincent’s Skinny Fabulous is revving up for his 26th birthday this Wednesday. He recently wrapped up his penultimate semester at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, just in time to kick it at home for Vincy Mas! First stop, Atlanta Carnival.

Skinny will be a joining a cast that includes Iwer George, Red Hot Flames, Superblue, and more at Atlanta’s Festival Village next Saturday and Sunday. But, America’s biggest city in the sSuth will be teeming with activity as 3 ( count em) THREE different festival committees host separate Caribbean carnivals over Memorial Day weekend.

The Nurse and the Skinny, (New York, 2008)

A few hours down the I-75, the city of Orlando will be jumping up for carnival too. San Francisco also traditionally celebrates Carnival this time of year. The party continues in 2009, with a decidedly latin feel. So, if you’re looking for soca ...you’re better off on the East Coast.

Bajan singer songwriter, Shontelle Layne will be on a completely different coast from now until at least June 9th. The award-winning soca songwriter, who is turning heads as she launches her career as an R&B diva, will be the opening act for all 15 date of her UK tour. Congrats girl! Knock ‘em dead.

The Grenadian artist who brought us "10 Commandments of a Jab Jab" recently signed with a small US label to make his music available to international audiences. Synnnah will be working with Sam Michaels and Dan Matthews of Klubjumpers. That duo are grammy winners who have worked with the likes of Mariah Carey and Lil Wayne in the past. Synnnah’s new sound will evolve into something more clubby than usual, but he hopes that eventually he will be able to introduce the US market to that real deal type of soca.

I'm Nurse Karen and those were Dr. Jay’s Rounds. For more information, you already know to check me out at Nurse dash Karen dot com. Or follow me – Nurse Karen on Twitter. Now, back to de docta!

Dr. Jay de Soca Prince, Soca Therapy and KOS Entertainment Presents:
FAY-ANN LYONS, BUNJI GARLIN & BENJAI
IN THEIR FIRST PUBLIC PERFORMANCE FOLLOWING AN HISTORIC CARNIVAL SEASON
SATURDAY, MAY 16, 2009
KoolHaus - Toronto, ON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TORONTO, ON (MUSTARD SEED MEDIA) –
Trinidad and Tobago’s royal family of soca is gearing up to end their 3-month performance hiatus this week, thanks to Dr. Jay de Soca Prince, Soca Therapy and KOS Entertainment.

Fay-Ann Lyons shattered records and broke boundaries earlier this year when she became the first female in Trinidad and Tobago history to win the annual International Soca Monarch Competition (“Meet Superblue”).  She walked away from the carnival season with a historic 4 competitive soca titles to her credit, winning; Groovy Soca Monarch (“Heavy T”), Peoples’ Choice and Road March as well – all while an incredible eight months pregnant!

Now the soca pioneer will dazzle audiences internationally for the first time since the birth of her daughter in Toronto, on Saturday, May 16 at the city’s premier concert  venue, KoolHaus.

"To be honest with you, Toronto coming like a second home," says Fay-Ann.  "Much love to New York, and everybody else, the Caribbean and everything, but when it come to Toronto, the kind of love you get from the people is something that you don’t get to get from even the few shows that you do in Trinidad and Tobago. So you must, must, must, make an effort to come and please your Toronto fans."

But she’s not coming alone. With her will be husband and four-time International Soca Monarch, Bunji Garlin whose own music career began in 1998 with title winning hits like,
"Down in the Ghetto," "Warrior Cry," and "Blaze the Fire." Bunji Garlin has a cult like following internationally, for his signature ragga soca style, and dynamic freestyle performances.

The pair will be joined by Benjai and backed by Trinidad’s 15-piece soca band Asylum.  Benjai himself was an active member of Bunji’s Godfather’s Asylum until 2005, when he left to pursue his solo career.  There he made a huge impact on the soca world with the anthem, “By the Bar.” Benjai’s music pervaded Carnival 2009, placing third in the Groovy Soca Monarch competition with “Drunk Again.” Saturday’s event will be the first time the two have performed together internationally in four years.

Fans look forward to an exhilarating full length live music experience, featuring all the 2009 hits, plus countless favourites of years gone by. Then dance the night away to the sounds of DJs;  Doors open at 10:00 p.m., 19+, Valid I.D. Required.
