Booster Shot: Dates announced for Caribana 2010
>> Friday, November 20, 2009
If you're a Canuck like me, the date of Caribana is far from a guessing game. It always falls the Saturday before Simcoe day, a civic holiday celebrating some historical figure or the other that I failed to learn about in grade school. For people in the Toronto area, that weekend means one of two things: 1.getting sloshed up north at the cottage, or 2. getting sloshed downtown on the Lakeshore.
Perhaps that's not exactly what EVERYONE does for their August long weekend, but it's the most anticipated Saturday in the Summer none the less. Just yesterday, the Caribana organizers made the dates known for 2010.
***Drum roll please***
Caribana 2010 will take place from July 13th, 2010 to August 1, 2010. Mark your calendars from now!
No updates have made it to the official website as yet, but over time you can find them here:

Hey Karen,
Just an update, it's actually quite poignant that Caribana is celebrated the weekend of Simcoe day as John Graves Simcoe was the first lieutenant (sp?) of Canada I believe in the late 1700's. He was the founder of York which is now Toronto, if I remember correctly. He was also the first person to abolish slavery in Canada, before the brits had even done so. My memory is pretty shotty in my old age, but I think that's all correct. Google it and find out.
Let's hope they take down the ridiculous fences this year!
Bless

WOW!! that's wonderful. Kinda unfortunate that the celebration of such an important figure is so overshadowed! I was aware that August 1st is emancipation day in Ontario, but I never did make the connection.
Thanks!
